Hi Guys I need to learn the basics of the modern day MAC.

I get lots of calls but don't really have the skills, so I knock them back; today a lady rang and she can't find anyone to help and shes the lady of the Manor so I gonna have a look after Christmas ~ she has Internet and Email Issues.

So Stupid question time , I know bugger all about Macs, I installed a gaggle of them back in the 80's as Graphics workstations but thats it.

So will MAC OS run a normal say PIII 500 I'm using as a foot stool at the mo?

Can a get a "evaluation" copy from somewhere ????

MAC OS only runs on macs, foul things that they are. Unless someone has produced an emulator package, which knowing how litigous Apple can be is unlikely.

Buy a second hand pile-of-shit Mac off ebay to get used to how they work. They all seem to work in much the same fashion. The OS is much less configurable than Windows, so there is much less to learn.

I find them a pain because it is much harder to see what the OS is doing and to track down faults without buying extra mac only software.

Macs are pants in so many ways (recognise a theme here?)

No the Mac OS only runs on chips specified by Apple. Currently its an IBM chipset but Motorola has also been used in the past. Most other hardware is similar to PC stuff and interchangeable if the correct drivers are available.

Course you can, but you need the hardware first.

Don't be put off by others slagging the Mac off but if you are used to PC's there will be a bit of relearning to do.
as Shuggie put it, once you've filtered out the bias, Buy a second hand pile-of-shit Mac off ebay to get used to how they work. They all seem to work in much the same fashion. Unfortunately Macs tend not to drop, second hand, prices quite as rapidly as the PC but a iMac running a G3 processor at about 500Mhz should be available at a reasonable price and will run the latest OS (10.3.7) with ease given areasonable amount of RAM.

For some reason IT pro's find the Mac threatening when its a friendly, easy to work with platform which has a lot going for it.
