i've been a lifelong apple fan and was a keen evangelist for them for many's a year. however, whilst i still think they're so much further ahead than microsoft, i might defect for a while. i need a little laptop and am not considering a mac offering because i don't want to spend that much on one and would rather wait until solid state memory comes down before i buy a new macbook.

so, an asus or an acer? given my aversion to microsoft, i'll probably try and goof about with linux, but really want this for bringing on bike trips, mobility, skype video, photos, music, email/browsing. it won't need to multi-task so processor speed isn't significant. i know the acer has an SD card slot which is handy for photos. battery life is also important.

advice from people who know would be appreciated...

Recently acquired an Acer One Pro for just the reasons you've listed, in my case the fact it came with a 5 way card reader to cope with most memory cards including my XD's was a major consideration.

BAttery life is close to 7 hours with the 6 cell unit it was supplied with, on that subject be careful as some versions come with a 3 cell fitted and you have to look closely at the actual spec when comparing.

Found the Pro at £295 plus vat and that's with 2gb Ram and a 250gb hard drive.

Where did you pick that up from Roger? Seems much cheaper than anywhere else...

Bought an EeePC a couple of weeks back. The 900 model, with Linux installed.

20G solid state hard drive
1G of Ram
900Mhz processor
3 USB ports
VGA out port
Lan port
Wifi built in
SD card reader built in
8.9 inch screen

I'm very pleased with it, although I have now installed XP so I can use Mapsource. Haven't bothered with anything else, as MS programs hog space, and since I can get online, write notes, store pics and plan routes, that's all I want from a trip PC.

Paid £112 from Ebay.

thanks all. yeah, my mum just picked one of these up, which i used all weekend and was so impressed that i'm fast running down the netbook road. i loved the samsung very much, but after a day trawling through search engines, i think the acer aspire one pro may just pip it to the post. i see misco are selling the pro for £299 plus vat, i just need to make sure that's with the big battery. i also think that for bike use (vibrations), the SSD would be better, which is the direction it'll all go anyway given that most people can pull down high volume storage space on t'internet.

thanks for the chipping in though fella's, most helpful

If you get a dell mini 9 you can run OS X on it :)
they are around £200
