Everywhere and nowhere baby!
I bought a nice little F2280 HP Deskjet printer today. Installed and tested it connected by USB directly to my laptop. Very nice.

I now want to relocate it up in the office area of the hoose next to my Netgear router that gives me my broadband access.

Now here's the numpty bit.....Can I connect the printer to the router so I can print remotely?

The printer seems to only have USB connection (it's got one of those "fat" USB's:eek).

The router only has the network cable type sockets.

I've also got a multi port USB hub doing nothing.

Give us a clue without laughing! :augie

My router has a USB socket for a printer, but if yours has only network sockets I think you will need to buy something called a print server, like this

This connects to the printer USB socket and will have a network socket for the, er, network. Don't think the USB hub will do much for you.

Short answer is no, you can't. Not so short answer is that there are network USB dongles that allow a USB port to be shared over a network, but these are difficult to find and expensive for what they are. Print servers are available but it's worth noting that many home use type printers will not work with them as the software expects to be able to communicate directly with the printer through the USB (thank you Lexmark for that).
Good luck

I have my Epson Stylus plugged into the USB of my LinkStation and the LinkStation setup to "share" the printer like any other windows shared printer.

It works but is very slow with large (photo) prints.

Is there a PC or laptop in the office area? Or just the laptop you want to carry around the house?

As Exter Lad suggests, if you have a PC or laptop wired to you router it's a quick and simple procedure to connect your "roaming" laptop to the printer using your WiFi network - it's what I'm using

Ummm....

....not sure about all this:confused:

I have a Netgear router to which I have a PC connected remotely by a Netgear thingy :o that I have plugged into a usb port on it (the pc). I also have my laptop connected to the Netgear router via the on-board wireless LAN thingy built in to it.

Now, I thought a router did just that. Route stuff from one thing to another. Obviously not!:(

I was convinced that if I had a cable with a USB on one end and a male cable end at the other and I told my pc to print it would be ecer so clever and find the printer. Stupid old git that I am.:D:mac
