New 1200GS engine software--what a transformation!

When my 1200GS was having the new gearbox fitted at the dealers a week or so back they mentioned they had downloaded the latest engine management software. What a transformation! Much smoother, better low down power, happy to run for extended periods at high revs, in fact just like the 1200RT I was praising.

More than a week later I still can't get over the difference. Sparkling. I'm putting it down to the software because I can't think what else made the difference. Before this my 12GS was the equivalent of the other 1200GS bikes that I had ridden, now it's about the same as the 1200RT engine. I'll be interested if other 1200GS owners notice the same.

It's a 2005 box which is reckoned to overcome some problems associated with the 2004 box, but I can't see how it's helped the performance. Could it improve the smoothness? Don't think so. The last service was 2000 miles ago, so that's nothing to do with it.

At my 12,000 service my bike rejected the "stop the flat battery risk" ECU upgrade......

Can't say as the battery has ever gone flat.....

The last time I had a software update a year ago the difference was a revelation.

My dealers attempted the very latest update release last week but there is some kind of problem (or was) with the upload and BWM were going to release a fix, presumably they have and the updates are now sorted.

Apparently if you make the ignition circuit with the key, then change your mind and turn off the bike without starting, the computer keeps the bike 'active' which drains the battery over the next few days. The latest software update is alleged to resolve this issue.

Often do this with our '04 1200's but never had a battery go flat
My Bike had it's 12,000 mile service a few weeks ago & came back transformed just as Zmeagol explains, will ask Dealer which update was used.

How is it that many of us are told by our dealers that a software / firmware update is not possible on the 12GS?... I complained about this lack of technical knowledge to the area manager for BMW Asia in Beijing and he promptly sent the details of my complaint along with my VIN numbers and the dealer in question Go-Chen BMW -Taichung to BMW HQ in Germany...

Now when I go to that dealer they fall over themselves trying to butter me up with big smiles and offering me coffee etc, but still no software update!... I didn't pay almost double BMW's already premium list price to make new friends, I paid to get the "best technical service backup in the world"... I'm still stuck without even the surging update!...

BMW Taiwan : Inept, Disorganised, Incompetant... and it doesn't look like BMW Germany cares at all...
