Is there a sealed battery that will replace the OEM one on 02 650GS without having to arse about altering the battery tray?

I fitted the Odyssey PC310 and didn't have to mess about altering battery tray. It is smaller in height than the oem battery, but slightly fatter and will sit on top of the original battery tray. Leaving a nice space below to house my Signal Minder, when I get chance to fit it

Been mounted like that for 6 months no problems.

none seem to be original size..

I've just replaced the battery in my 2000 Dakar. I assume it will be the same battery (Yuasa YB12AL-A), the replacement is a copy made by Varta, they use the same number as the original and a product code512013012. It is a like for like swap. It cost £27.84 inc VAT from SYBS Ltd, I got mine in Liverpool but they have branches in Sheffield and Leeds.

When I started the bike up after changing the battery (yesterday) my tacho, speedo, oddo and clock are not functioning - my ham fistedness I think, nothing to do with the battery. I'll check all the connections when I get the chance.

saw that one but i was told to try and get a sealed battery/gel, not an acid one

i have a westco 12V14 L-B In mine a tight squeeze but i didnt need to do any mods , available from tayna batteries

A friend in the trade told me that 90% of the battery problems they encounter are with the gel type batteries. Though I do have one on my Moto Guzzi, and it's been fine.

I got seven years out of my Dakar original lead acid battery, and probably could have got longer if the bike was in more regular use. Lead acid batteries have been around many years without problems, after all you can't change the laws of physics. They're also half the price!

In the last 7 years I have installed Westco batteries in all of my motorcycles. The oldest being 7 years old & to date shows no evidence of reduced efficiency. That being my sunday rider garage queen. My greatest fear with a bike tipover is spilled battery acid which is a non event with AGM....

Just one persons experience here, there are pros & cons for both...
