New bike collection - Any tips?

Enjoy the first rides, that feeling cannot be repeated.

I left BMW Motorrad in Manchester and even after 100 yards at the red light i was already beaming.
As i opened it up on the duel carriageway overtaking for the first time i was more than impressed with the pickup for a big bike (id always had sports bikes before) cruising home on the motorway was nice too.
I remember getting home knowing I made the right choice, it was great in rush hour Manchester, moved spritely (unexpected) and cruised at 70+ real easy.

Years later although I still enjoy the bike, nothing feels like that getting to know you phase, it all feels normal now.

You will love it, especially if the weather stays like this all summer!

I'm finally picking up my new 1250 GS next Thursday. Call me stupid but this is my first bike. I'm 44, not really a sports bike fan and touring/off road are my bag with a trip to Malta planned for next year, so I wanted to future-proof myself. I'm fairly confident on the road but it's been about 6 months since I passed. I'd rather struggle at first than have to upgrade in a few months.

Live in Birmingham and collecting the bike somewhat south of Guildford. That's a hefty first ride. I've planned a route with Calimoto going through Hampshire and then up towards the Cotswolds.

Any tips on my first few miles? Anything those more experienced amongst us could recommend?

Would also love to know any decent stop off spots along that route.

Now trying to teach you how to make kids, but firstly…
Take it easy (some will lough and think I am nuts), be sure to put the bike into Rain Mode for the first 30 miles or so at least. Get used to the weight of the bike, power delivery, how it handles, etc. don’t be so confident and stick it straight into Dynamic Pro Mode, as your thinking of being fairly confident might be a bit premature.
I am only 42 and had my first bike as 2014 1200GS. It caught me out on a ride back home from Maidenhead. The GS/A especially 1250 is far more powerful than a 600-750cc training bike you’ve been learning on and I assume you haven’t swung a leg over a big bike since you’ve passed your test over 6 months ago. You do not want to be fishing your SOA out the hedge on a day one.

As for traveling through Cotswold on you way to the Rubbish City, I’d stop at Broadway Tower Country Park for a coffee break and a nice view on a day like today. Beware of many day trippers with their sprogs about, seeing as it is a half term.

Bon voyage l, enjoy your new purchase and be sure to keep it upright, rubber side down preferably.

Broadway Tower is a good shout. Fish Hill is fantastic but there was a serious accident last weekend so expect a police presence there.

Also avoid Bibury and Bourton-on-the-water at the moment. They’re both struggling with coach tourist so traffic gets really bad.

Yep! If OP fancies some motor gazing, then Caffeine & Machine might be a place to stop for lunch. Be careful around the area though. Keep an eye out for nutters showing off their lack of drifting skills, etc.
