Had my 30k service last week, and had asked my local dealer to look into the bike surging below 3,000 RPM. I had noticed that it disappears if I remove then replace the lower coils, only to resurface about 150 miles later.

I was told that it could be BOS exhaust, causing the gases to move too fast for the O2 sensors;or, it could be my HID lights causing interference on the CANBUS; or, it could be the cover I have fitted over the TPS on the left hand throttle body ....

Amomgst these ramblings, I was offered an official BMW fuel re-map, which would make the bike "softer". The remap is apparently irreversible, once the mod is done you have to live with its result, be it good or bad.

Given the diagnosis of the surging, which existed before any of the listed causes were fitted, I declined.

Has anyone heard of such a mapping change from BMW, and, if so, do you have any more informationm regarding its impact ? "Softer" is not even vague ...

In the very early days, the 1200GS suffered from an annoying 'lurch' as the engined decelerated through (c) 2400rpm. This was sorted with the first software update within a few months. My first 1200 suffered from this, but not after the software update.

I'd take the re-map.

I don't believe there can be a remap that is "irreversible"!

And softer could mean smoother in fact.

I think the last s/w update had some specific fuel remaps for the K1200S which were like you describe but this did not apply to the GS12. As said above there was a remapping to prevent a surge when rolling off but that was in the very early days of the GS12.

Re-maps are ireversible because dealers to not hold the 'older' maps ie once a new one is issued by MBW it overwrites the previous one held by the dealer IYSWIM

AFAIK there have been several software updates of which at least a couple have included fueling re-maps.

My dealer (Pidcocks) have told me that, as a rule they do not automaticaly upload new software as it becomes available unless the customer experiances a particular fault covered by that particular update as in their experiance as much harm as good may sometimes be done to a previously ok running bike (and, of course, it's ireversible).

The 'softer' re-map rings a bell (just) with me and was brought in to deal with some bikes that experianced low down surging.

If I were you I don't think I would go for the re-map as, plainly, the bike has been running fine for some time so the fuel settings have patently been ok. Something else sounds like it's at fault and a softer re-map may only serve to disguise this.

Thanks guys.

BTW, OutToMunch, I probaably was not clear enough that I have had the lwo RPM surging since new in March 2006. A software update and new coil in July 2006 reduced it to a much less noticeable level.

After my adventures in Wales at WOBMW in July this year I realised that my bike was nowhere near as smooth at lower revs as the hired 1200GS, even though the hired bike had a crushed left hand exhaust.

I would like to try and understand what "softer" actually means...:nenau
