Six times Dakar competitor Simon Pavey and his team of experienced off-road instructors taught over 600 motorcyclists to ride off-road in 2005 on the BMW Off-Road Skills course. Already the 2006 courses are filling up fast and therefore Simon has allocated extra dates for the Level One and Two courses.

The new dates are:

23-24 June - Level One
25-26 June - Level One and Two
15-16 September - Level One
17-18 September - Level One and Two

BMW's Level One course teaches people to ride off-road for the first time and is also suitable for people who have ridden off-road before. Each course will have both novice and experienced groups.

The two-day course based in the beautiful surroundings of south Wales where the bikes supplied are a F650 GS, F650 GS Dakar or a R1200 GS. The course teaches participants the essentials of off-road riding with the objectives of increased confidence and machine control, together with improved riding skills and ultimate enjoyment when riding off-road.

Students learn bike control skills, which are transferable to the road, such as:

to lift, balance and manoeuvre a motorcycle in awkward situations
slow-speed manoeuvring and control
balance and control on a motorcycle
throttle and clutch control
improved braking ability
ascending and descending hills safely and confidently.
This course caters for riders who have had no off-road experience whereas others had been riding for years. Participants are divided into groups, depending on their skill level. The result is that everyone improves their riding ability.

Once participants have completed the Level One BMW Off-Road Skills course they can increase their skills even further by taking part in the BMW Off-Road Skills - Level Two course.

BMW's Level Two course is for riders who have confidently completed the Level One course. It takes participants to the next stage of off-road riding where they will ride more challenging trails and learn new skills that will help them handle difficult terrain.

The skills taught are:

brake turns
riding ruts and changing lines
ascent and descent techniques
riding off-camber
suspension techniques.
Both courses are two-days, which are held at the spectacular 4,000-acre Walters Arena Enduro Park in south Wales, where participants are taught to ride on a BMW F650 GS, F650 GS Dakar or R1200 GS.

Riders need to be physically fit to take part. They should also be confident and competent in all skills learnt on the Level One course - by completing the course one or more times and have graduated to the experienced group.

BMW's two-day Level One an Two, Off-Road Skills courses each cost £360 for participants riding a BMW F650 GS or a F650 GS Dakar. For those riding a R1200 GS, the course is £395. The price includes two-days of instruction, motorcycle hire, third party insurance, fuel, meals, refreshments and a certificate of completion. It does not include accommodation or evening drinks.

Thanks Kylie booked Rick and myself on this morning. :thumb

Maybe it'll help in the snow next time we take a couple of RT's to Lisbon!

BTW I bought one from Duncan on the basis of the experience, great bike. Look forward to my first Track Day.
