Hi

I have just bought a 2nd hand R1150 GS with 10000 on the clock. It is a revelation and obviously will take some getting used to.

Would a loud 'clonk' (wearing no ear plugs) -in the clutch- upon releasing the lever, be normal ?.It certainly creates jerky progress across country. I imagine this is the Agricultural thing making itself apparent.

Yep !!

As the BMW salesman will tell you.... "They all do that sir" My Adventure is two weeks old has 355 km on the clock and clunks like my gs with 12800 miles on it.:beerjug:

Hi Ben

Good choice of bike!

My 1150 has a few more miles than yours, but certainly doesn't 'clonk' on take-off. Sounds like you might have a drive-shaft going ex.

Did you buy it from a dealer? If so, take it back and have them rectify the problem!

Has the bike got ABS?

'cos if it has, it's the ABS going "clink clunk" when you go more than about 2MPH at start off. This is normal.

Ah yes, that clunk! (Sounds like you're running over an empty Coke can every time you move off). Yes, that's normal and a sign that your ABS is self-checking.

No to the ABs I'm afraid. It is simply the clutch and all the play in the various shafts being taken up. Whether it is as good as it should be, i don't know.

Ben.

I get the clonk sound too. It seems to only happen when I pull away in 1st from a standstill. Kind of sounds like some slack is being taken up in the shaft itself. I have asked other GS riders about this and so far haven’t found anyone else who suffers from it. I have found that if I’m very careful with the clutch release then most of the time the noise can be avoided but it still happens occasionally. Have covered 8000 miles so far on the bike with no major problems so I don’t think it’s a real show stopper but would be interested to find out what the noise is. I didn’t buy the bike from a dealer, but seeing as you did why don’t you take it back and ask them about it – and then let me know!

Mind did that until

Mind developed that between 2500miles and 3000 miles. After the service today it has gone. Certainly a clutch engaging and disengaging sound. Goes with revs right and comes back when you drop to a creep speed?

I know I have seen it commented on the board before.

Don't worry

Don't worry about it, the engine isn't even run in yet. It stops eventually, just keep an eye on it. We'll have to go out for a blast sometime, I'm only in Worcester.

I bought the bike from Mark Fitch-Kemp at BVM Stroud. He took my VFR VTEC in exchange...and quite a diffrenece there is! I am 'famously' (not) gearbox clunk intollerent. Every Jap bike I have had in the lst three years has fallen below par in this area..but I am much more relaxed when it is a 1940's design. I am a farmer, after all, so Agricultural manerisms do not worry me..in the right place.

Upon further listening, it is quite simply all the slack being taken up along the length of the transmission process. It may be a little excessive, and Mark says he'll do something about it at the next service if needed.

The first BMW I owned was constantly being stripped down by the dealer hunting the Agricultural demons that haunted its innards. I must have been a complete nightmare to them. This was an R100RS circa 1982.

My ear is far more discerning now having ridden motorcycles clonking and clunking around the globe, across continents, deserts and into at least one private swimming pool.

The GS suits me, but has come a little late. The first one I saw was in the Sudan in 1983 with shell splinters in the seat..rider unhurt. The second was also in the Sudan...with two Germans and a sidecar.....their female passenger had copped it, so to speak.

Vern, the ride sounds like a sound plan.I hope I haven't put you off. :D

Another "New Boy" here and not far from Hereford Ben. Having picked up my GS today that "click clunk" / crushing Coke can noise has come to my attention. I thought at first it was the side/main stand dragging.

VERN.
Are you from Rainbow Hill? (see other post in Tech area " Smokey Ned.....) Cause others have warned me about you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regards

Tim
