The time has come to replace all of the above as they are decidely worn now. So where is the best place to get them from. Have been to BMW dealer and got a price from them but there seems to be loads of different aftermarkets ones, for loads of different places.

What have other people bought and what would you recommend??

I firmly believe in fitting genuine BMW parts, as a complete package. Chain, sprockets. Also rubber cush drives if at all worn.

There will be those that fit none original parts, and swear by them. Good luck to 'em! Many complain of poor fitting front sprockets on the gearbox splines  but fit them regardless mmmmm :nono

We did 19,500 miles, twenty three countries, in over five months, rode through deserts, along unmade roads, and some of it in attrocious weather, on one set of original chains and sprockets, so in these I'll trust :thumb

The BMW chain is one piece so you'll have to remove the swinging arm to fit it.If your bearings are as bad as mine were (at16,000mls) then you'll be glad you did!

I fitted a brand name (DID I think, can't remember) X ring replacement chain to Clare's F650. It was a rivet type, but I have the correct tool, so it was as easy as on any other bike. Scottoiler fitted and I don't think I've had to adjust it since fitting, at least 1000 miles ago (after the initial settling in).

The point about checking the swing arm bearings is a good one though, it can't hurt.

I tried a few different types of non original sprockets and found them all to be ill fitting on both the countershaft and on the rear hub. One of the fronts actually caused a tiny amount of damage on the countershaft splines before I noticed it was sh**e. (long story)

Original BMW sprockets are the only answer, chains are another matter. Any good quality O or X ring chain would be fine.

I agree with Mickey, I prefer to get Original parts where possible. Original BMW parts are generally much cheaper than their Japanese equivalent and I have found things like BMW air filters, Oil filters etc. are only marginally more expensive from the dealer.

Mike.
