I've recently started a thread about the fact my 06 GSA failed to start on a trip to Switzerland recently....and has been running 'rough' ever since.

I took my bike in a dealers yesterday...not the one where I'd had the service done admittedly, but a new one that has just opened locally to me in Norwich.

While they were looking into the problem they checked the ignition recognition problem (EWS??) that has affected some bikes, and it was found not a problem with mine, and also downloaded updates to the on-board computer.

…these updates he said were “only downloaded to bikes after customers complain of poor running, cos if they are downloaded to a bike that is running fine customers can complain that it is running badly afterwards”

…now it may be psychological….but although it defiantly sounds better now, and runs better, there seems to be a sort of loss of power from take-off, and a flat-spot around the 4,000/4,500 revs mark that I’ve never noticed before, and the back-fire on over-run seems less pronounced.

I know I only took it for a short blast afterwards, and when you are looking for something you often see new things that were always there, but it defiantly ‘seems different’, as if the ignition has been retarded???

Any ideas…or is this normal after the updates…and worse case, are they removable???

Having said all that, I’ve got to praise Linds for their helpfulness and approach, and hope they do well in Norwich….it will be a prise to stop going to Balderstones, but a BMW in East Anglia has been long awaited and they ought to be applauded for taking the plunge. :thumb2

sounds like a right fecking bodge.

why don't they just fix the poor running? :blast

I know!!.....I wish they had said that before they'd done it, and I'd have said not to!!

And I know it's a little unfair...but they haven't long been open, and I was a bit wary that they really knew what thay were doing to be honest.

That's probably a little unfair to them....but I would have taken it into Balderstones and left it in confidence....it's hard to do that when the dealers have only been open for a week or so.

I don't think Linds can be criticised. To paraphrase from your original post:

You complained of poor running. Linds updated the firmware. You now say it's running better, if not a little differently.

Can you not go back to them, explain your concerns and ask to take out one of their bikes which has had the same update in order to make a direct comparison?

It was explained to me by Pidcocks that they don't always download and update just because a new software version is available, there has to a good reason to do so. One reason is, as you state, it may upset an otherwise ok bike.

Also, once loaded, there is no way to reload the earlier version as it's overwritten on your bike and the dealers do not hold copies of earlier versions.

I wouldn't critise Linds...I thought they did what they thought was best, and ultimately, from what you are saying, what BMW dealers do as a rule.

As you've said it has rectified the problem so I can't moan....just got to get used to the different characteristics I guess.

And I'm sure they would be happy to listen to my concerns, and to try a bike as comparison.....as I've said I really can't fault them for their helpful manner, and really wouldn't want this thread to be seen as a moan or whinge.

I will certainly be using them again, and they will definately be getting my custom in the future :thumb2

Just wondered if anyone had experienced these symtoms or changes after having an update.

To be honest I had my 6000 mile service done at Canons .I was given the computor updates & as far as I was aware it was running fine before
On the way back I felt it had a flat spot that wasn't there before the service.
I've more or less got used to it now but with having a 120 mile round trip I couldn't be arsed to take it back . After reading this seems there wouldn't be any point as they can't undo it anyway
With one thing and another I think it'll be Balderstones or give the local Linds a try.
