Hi guys.

Yacht captain / motorcycle enthusiast looking to buy an F800GS unless someone talks me out of it.
Our yacht is in Spain and I hope to ride the bike through Europe and catalogue my experiences with my Nikon.
I look forward to meeting some of you.

We do have a FS&W section further down the forum but you'll need to be fully subscribed to take advantage of the goodies on offer in there.

Here's a link should you wish you use it :thumb2

Welcome to the forum by the way .... its good to have you with us. :)

Good choice David, I've posted a reply in the 'welcome' section. It'll be interesting to see how you get on with the bike on and off the boat. Good luck with that, I look forward to the pics. Sounds like the perfect bike for most of the Med. What's the boat? Gin Palace, or yacht with canvas? BTW, I'm not envious at all, not a bit.

The boat is a 40M motoryacht. We have a 7M tender (rib) that's a center console. Our davit is rated for 1T, so that's not a problem. The complication is when we are docked stern-to because then we have to lift the bike into the tender and take it to the dock. When side to - then obviously we can lift it straight onto the dock.
I'm thinking about building a special transport pallet and taking the wheels off when storing on the boat. Center stand allows you to do that......
With the pallet, the physical size is much smaller and the cg will be a lot lower and it won't be so hairy in a small tender.
The last thing, I repeat, the last thing I want to be known for is dropping a new BMW in the drink in front of Angelie Jolie or something.... :)
So, some things to mull over, but I have time since we are chartered up pretty much all the way to July.
But, I am very much interested in any feedback, so let it rip.

At the end of the day the F800 is around 250kg dry. You have loads of power with it & easy job with panniers/pillion.

Trouble is you need to have the bike near or close to upright or its like someone adds 1-2 bags of cement on your back. After that its going to lye down where ever it is, if you get it wrong.

Would the F650 be lighter?

Not by much.....

Therein lies my dilemma. Yes, I could save about 60lbs or so on a bike like a DR or XR, etc., but that cuts my range and possibilities down quite a bit.

Getting the bike off when side to is not an issue whatsoever, but backing it int -- this is when things get tricky. It's either the tender, or another option is the gangway. It's not very wide, but it might be better than doing it with the tender.
I also have the added benefit of super cool owners and captain, so if we are going stern to, we can pull up along side, unload and then dock. Usually, I wouldn't have this much leeway, but like I said - I got lucky with this one..

Still pondering...

So I did that.... what do I get?:rob

You're looking for a bike.... GS Motorcycles for sale and wanted is the place to look :thumb You can't get in there unless you're a subscriber :) reckon that'd be a great adventure- pick one up, ride it home

Hey guys.

Looks like I am leaning more towards the G650XChallenge.

F800GS is too bulky to manouver comfortably and it's about 50kg's too heavy.

what is your opinion on the XC?

I've read for the most part that it's a very good 'do it all' bike??

I'm interested mostly in adventure riding and some long, remote getaways.

Let me know what you think.

long adventures?

on a g650 xc:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

you will need a backside made of iron.

gs a better bet i think
