Der Lustenauer
Guest
Having been very happy with my first ever GPRS (Quest1) I am now in the market for a new GPRS.
However, this device has to be able to pass the ‘Lustenauer Test V1.01, Gaschurn – Bormio’ satisfactorily.
I want a GPRS which shows me the shortest route from Gaschurn (Austria, Silvretta) to Bormio (Italy) when I give those 2 locations into my GPRS and get it calculated there.
There are a few mountains in the way. Some of the passes have winter closure.
My future GPSR should not care about that, winter closure and the like I would care about myself. Shortest route only is required (Goalpost is around a 180 km / 110 miles, Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse-Umbrail Pass would make that possible).
Explanation for the request for help.
(In the following I try to use the proper technical terms).
MapSource fed with CS7 passed the above test with flying colours. So did the Quest1 fed with CS7.
MapSource and the Quest1 fed with CN8 fail terribly, around 260 km / 160 miles is the best they come up with.
I normally plan very little for my travels (apart from some interesting detours from the trodden trails which I want to switch on when I am there), do not book Hotels etc, its holiday and adventure after all, and am, because of that, often in the situation where I have to plan the next stage of my journey on the screen of the GPSR. Then I really want the shortest route which I can change then as I fancy.
From another forum I hear that the Garmin 2720 (fed with CN8) passes the ‘Lustenauer Test V1.01’, despite Mapsource and the Quest1 failing it.
Are there other Garmin units which route like the Quest1 with CS7?
What does the Quest2 (I could use the same TT holder and cable with that one) do with that route?
Can somebody confirm what I hear about the 2720 in this respect?
What does the TomTom Rider do?
I would be really grateful if some of you could run that route through your devices and tell me the findings.
As a little thank you in advance for your findings, one of my detours off the well trodden trails in the Alps.
Location: Reschen Pass (Austria-Italy)
If you do not need another picture of the church tower in the lake as you have been there already, try the following (needs a bit of time, but it is spent well).
If you zoom in to 0.5 miles in MapSource on to the lake you will see what appears to be a dead end road going to ‘Val di Roja’. On the end of that road are the highest all year round inhabited farms in North Italy (the ‘Rojenhoefe’). From here you can go further on to a parking place called ‘Schoeneben’ and from there down to St. Valentin (San Valentino). Small road, sometimes single carriageway, not in CN8.
If you take this little route into consideration, have a look at the unpaved road going of to the right before you reach the ‘Rojenhoefe’, it will lead you on an old military road to the ‘Reschner Alm’ (15% gradient, nice fine gravel, only medium skills required) where you will have one of the best views in the area (great for a picnic) as far as places you can reach by motor in this area goes.
