New GSA 12 Volt Accessory Plug Help

Already a plug there, do a search for canbus plug. NN etc sell one ready made.

Yep do the search but for info on later models lie down next to the font wheel and look up behind the oil cooler.
Looks like:
It was in a different place (near the headstock on earlier models)
2 choices
- BMW lead with trailing wires to use like you want - although have heard some dealers won't sell them cos of a directive from BMW.
- Nippy Normans lead that already has an appropriate connector on the end for your GPS (or NN lead and chop the end off if you have the wrong GPS)

The canbus socket is limited to 5amps and is only switched with ignition. If you ever want to use it engine off i.e for compressor, tent light etc., then you will need to make a fused connection direct to the battery. When I get time that's what I'm going to be doing. Just another option.

I bought a flush fit optimate socket which comes with eyelets wired straight to the battery, drilled a hole in the beak and fitted it the same as a BMW one. It can then power anything in my tankbag and I plug the optimate in to it to charge the battery with no canbus problems

Fitted the DIN socket from Nippy Norman. The socket is fitted on the left beak in the gap designed for it between the two winglet screws.
If you feel under the beak between the screws you can feel the hole in the metal support plate made for a socket Just use a pencil to mark the bottom of the beak around the inside of the hole. Take off beak and drill/file s hole in the centre of the mark to suit the socket. Refit beak and fit socket in hole.
I wired mine direct to battery (with inline fuse) for two reasons. First I wanted to use items such as small mains inverter and tyre pump which will not work when using the GS socket due to the 5 amp restriction. Second I want power available when the ignition is off.
I found I could use a mains inverter to charge my computer and mobile phone without affecting the ability of the battery to start the bike.
Can't see why you want it for a satnav though, surely its better to hard wire it.

Now my knowledge of technical stuff could be written on the back of a very small stamp,so i may be wrong here,but the dealer from whom i just purchased my new 1200gs mu, led me to believe that this socket was for use with Garmin sat nav's and that the canbus system would not recognise anything else that was wired to or connected to it

One my 650 twin which also has the canbus etc etc, and I power my autocom from the plug.
So either the dealer is BS you, or you heard him wrong. BTW if the dealers words were correctly heard, how would they power a BM Nav 4?

Maybe i misunderstood what he had said,but as i said before my techno knowledge is very limited,but i will ask him to go through it again when i pick the bike up.

Maybe they meant it was a 12v feed, so 5v GPS etc can't be powered from it without it being reduced down??

ANY kit that can run from a 12v cigarette socket can work from the satnav socket providing it does not exceed the amp limit - I understand 5amps. That means any satnav, mobile phone charger or similar eqpt. The canbus system maybe clever but cannot check who made the satnav that plugs in.
The plug for the socket seems quite easy to find but I never bothered. I just tinned the ends of the satnav cable (i.e. covered them with a thin layer of solder). and pushed them into the holes in the satnav socket. Held in place with some insulating tape. Sounds a little Heath Robinson but its worked that way for four years on a bike thats used all year in rain and snow and has done a couple of trips around Europe.
Why do we make things so complicated these days. Just plug it in and enjoy.

i swear to God this plug behind the oiler cooler is killing me - My 08 GS (facelift)- doesnt have it no matter how hard i look?
Is that photo an a pre 08?

The other option, that was on older 1200's, was up by the headstock.

Nope that is an '08 the earlier models had it near the headstock - although there is some discussion about exactly when they moved it - as Feb '08 bikes seem to have it near the headstock, but May '08 has it as per my photo.
For info a photo of the other location next to the horn below the headstock - in this photo it is the lower socket - no one seems to be able to confirm exactly what the upper socket is for. Also note that it might be tied up to the wiring loom when you first find it (so not dangling down like shown.)

Egg - ur a lifesaver - those two plugs have been mocking me for weeks. BTW my GS is a Feb 08 build & looks exactly like ur shot!
Now to figure out where to buy the plug to run my front power point in my dash (wunderlich cockpit 2) - Cant find on in Oz!

Hmm caught your posts on AdvRider too - the original photo on there makes the second connector look slightly different otherwise I would have confirmed that ages ago.
I guess the bulkier block connector is the Purge Valve for the fuel canister thingy that neither of our countries require.
