Howdy:

Installed a 320gb hdd in place of 40gb on on XP-Pro pc.

Used the Dell reinstallation cd to put XP on it. It saw it as C:

When I open My Computer, the new HDD is reported as E:

Can't seem to rename it as it is the boot disc.

Anyone know why it has become the E: drive, when it is the only HDD in the machine?

C: is reported as a removable disc....

Any clues?

Bin, has the machine also got a built in Card readers which read as drives?, I recently did a reboot of a friends PC with a clean install of XP, it was installed to 'C' as normal, but became 'D' at the end of the installation, tried all ways to rename the drive 'C' again but without success.

To cure it I had to physically disconnect the built in Card readers, do another clean installation and then after being satisfied that 'C' was the HDD I re-connected the card reader and all was fine with the world again:thumb2

Dickieboy,
No external card reader and no anything, except a web-camera and VOIP handset. When I click on C: it says insert disc.
Anyhow, E: it is and E: is shall remain by the look of things....

you can allocate drive Letters in "Computer Managment"

IT's in:
Control Panel - Administrative Tools -Computer Managment
In this Wondow you have "Disk Managment" at the bottom left (Below Storage).

You can change the drive letters here.

It can be a common problem as most external drives want to be "F" but a lot of office networks traditionally use F internally

One other thing, did you actually remove the original drive? If not it'll just see this as a slave drive and not the master.
On the back of the Hard Drive you bought there are some bridging pins with a little map on the label on top telling you which pins to swap to make the drive a Master.

Wasn't really necessary to replace the old drive as you could have had both (C Drive as it was, and the enw drive couod have been renamed D)

Bin' there must be something else attached/installed somewhere in or on the PC if 'C' is labelled as a 'removable' drive, what happens if you open 'C', where does that take you?

Padge:

Ta, however - "Cannot modify drive letter of your system or boot volume"

I took out the old drive, as I did not foresee any problem replacing it...

Set the jumper to Master, Drive "0"

Dickieboy,

C: is shown as Removable Disk in My Computer. When I click the ferker, it says "Insert a disk into Drive c:

Sheesh!

Re Jumpers: Should I have used setting for "Cable select" and not "Master" ?

Bin

you can use cable select, but i can't see it making any difference to your drive letter problem. make sure that the drive is connected to the end connector on the ribbon cable though (80 wire cable).

as regards the drive letter thing. have you got any more drives on the PC that might contain a "recovery partition"?
if not, maybe the recovery disc was left in the drive on reboot after install. non MS install discs can be seen as primary drives according to my quick google.
it would seem a reinstall is needed to swap the drive letters back.

Hi,
I wonder...
I have a Dell monitor that has a 4-1 USB hub built-in. I connected it to one USB port on the PC, and I can plug things into the monitor USB ports. Wonder if that is the ferker.

Going to unplug this hub, and re-do the restore from the CD, let's hope it sees a C and not an E.
