What's a bike MOT???????

Feck away off with yourself! :upyou

Sure it'll provide some sort of entertainment, they could sell tickets for people to come watch the testers hang onto the bikes as they shoot backwards off the rollers in same way as the cars do in the NCT.

New MOT Bike test in NI

Well guys, just realised at the weekend that the MOT was up my 'new' R1200RT, booked her in for this evening in Enniskillen, made it to the centre on the dot of the appointment time, tester waves me in. That's when I remembered the brake test.
The boys did the usual pushing and pulling and poking, pretty thorough, then one of them explained the brake test procedure and asked me if I wanted to do it myself or if I wanted him to take it through for me. Long story short, I decided well it's my bike and I'll take her through myself. The whole thing was pretty painless, the RT is no lightweight and I have only done 700 miles on it, but I never felt that things were getting out of hand. While the tester was printing the cert for me I was chatting one of the other boys, who said that they had discretion about putting bikes on the rollers. They have had a couple of GS's in, the owners had declined to sit on their bikes for the brake test on the rollers and the testers had so far declined as well. He also said that they had all had training on the roller test for bikes.
On the subject of our Southern brethern, I thought you had to get your bikes tested already, I reckon it won't be long before you have that to look forward to as well. I spend a fair bit of time tootling around the back roads of Cavan and Leitrim, there are still plenty of old boys out on their Honda/50/70/90's and it's obvious that the wee bike is their only transport. I admire some of the fertiliser bag fairings, imaginative designs of topboxes etc. I guess I should take a few photos as they won't be around much longer. But I guess that's progress........

I hope you are sitting down for this Johnny ,but you might not have realised that Northern Ireland is a different country to England. Yes, it has a different Parliament, laws, culture, languages, food and traditions!
Genuine question

How can one part of the uk have a different MOT system for bikes than another?

We've had brake rollers for over 20 years & had to pass this more stringent test & they do fail some bikes

A simple push test, how can that be a reliable brake test on a modern bike?

The guy who does my GSA is about 5'7 & he manages with the Ohlins which are 1" higher than stock & has done for years

Perhaps NI should get in line with the rest of the country they are supposed to be in a Union with

If the Ministry tester isn't competent with bikes then they'd better get up to speed quick

Can't believe such a lax system had been permitted in comparison to ours

I would dare any one of the examiners to try and throw is leg over my GS , I have did the wheels and changed seat which puts you up another inch or more . I have a 35 inside seam and I am on limit . As for Goldwing I don't fancy trying to lift it if she goes down . Roll on the spring when it's sure to be wet ,and floor like glass ,wet boots . Oh the fun . I would love to see them try to test a sidecar ..driving is a skill in its self . Will watch this post with intrest .

check their policy regards damage, i know for cars in the south, you sign saying any damaged caused during test is your responsibility and not the test facility

might be something to consider if they drop bike

may not be same up north though, but would surprise me if its buried in small print

Had a bike in on Tuesday. All fairly straight forward and you get to ride straight out the other side as opposed to trying to reverse out the door you came in. Well at least i did which was a first for me...

Got my GSA tested in Mallusk tonight. Much more thorough than previous tests.

Young lad informed me the bikes now had to go on the brake rollers and was this a problem?

Told him I'd no problem with my bike doing it, paused and said but it has aftermarket shocks, good bit taller than normal and I wouldn't like to do it myself. He sat on the bike, confirmed it was very tall and very heavy.

He asked his 3 mates something and one of them laughed at him. (Think he was looking a volunteer). He had to then go see the boss in the office and the outcome was no brake test.

Even got a long piece of metal to check rear wheel alignment compared to front. His mate pointed out the shaft drive to him, but told me shaft driven bikes do run a bit out of line :nenau

Headlight was a bit low for his machine, so he called a mate over to help me push the rear of the bike down to get a pass on that part.... Fair play!

So I've now got an MOT.

england, scotland and wales must have had rollers for over 10 years, sure at the time they changed the rules so the tester had to hold a full licence for the class of vehicle they are testing

Interesting.

I wasn't aware the MOT test had changed.

We'll see how it goes, as my Panzer isn't back for test until April 2015.:augie

So the Panzer went through the 'New' test yesterday.

The tester done the usual checks, lights, brakes, horn etc then a bit of shake to check wheels bearings and the like. Then the dreaded roller test. He explained what was required but it was now compulsory and if I didn't do it one one the staff would. Firstly I moved the bike unto a red weight plate to measure the front axle weight, the computer works out what minimum braking force is required. Into the rollers, back brake on then apply the front when told Then out of the rollers, back wheel unto the weight plate and repeated the process. This was done with the engine off, so dont know how this will effect bikes with fitted servos:nenau

Rode to the end of the test centre and new MOT Certificate obtained. :clap

Nothing to be worried about in my opinion

Did my bike today in Ards. Let the tester do the brake test. Prefer testing centre to drop the bike rather than me!

I did mine a few weeks ago, only had the bike a few days and am a bit on the short side, so reaching the ground is a stretch.

I did all the usual test things and the guy, who I knew was a biker, said about the roller test. I said I wasn't overly comfortable incase the bike did jump, so he did it.

In and out in about 12 minutes at most, MOT passed and away again.

Mine is a servo assisted brakes version and I think for memory he left the engine running, but may be wrong.
