new nav iv user, updating

just got my new sat nav for the lc yesterday and the maps were pre installed, i tried to update them but it said they are up to date with this mapping,
Navigator Europe NT 2012.10 - Map+2D+P+3DB, Apr 11date
isnt this out of date?
what do i need to do?

Current mapping is 2013.40, so yes, yours is out of date.

I'm assuming that you have set-up a myGarmin account and have registered the device. I'm also assuming that you are trying to update the mapping via the NuMaps Guarantee?

You say that the sat nav is new yet it seems to have been around for a while if it has 2012 mapping (usually, of the four yearly updates only the last is actually in the year that the mapping title infers). If the sat nav is new do you know if it's been switched on at any time and allowed to get a satellite lock? If it has then the 90 days may well be up. IF it was genuinely new from a retailer then a call to Garmin should have them zeroing the clock on those 90 days.

It might be worth considering buying a NuMaps Lifetime update anyway, you can get these from Handtec for about £50. This is what I did with my Zumo, would have done it anyway. Not sure if the regular update is applicable to BMW units though

One other thing is that Garmin appear to have withdrawn the latest update (2013.40) for technical reasons. Should be available again shortly.

Bugger.. I've just updated my SatNav, PC, laptop and Netbook to 2013.40... not 5-minute job!

its got free lifetime updates it says on the box but when i go to garmin express it says its up to date

Does the device say it's the 2012 mapping, or is that the version on a DVD?

2013.4 is quite definitely the current version. Have you set up a mygarmin account?

i think ive cracked it well not really but i bought the unit on 20th march 2013, when i plugged it into garmin dashboard it said it was unlocked on 12/01/2013! it only gives you 60 days to use it or lose the lifetime update im told, very strange

If it was supposed to be new, I'd have a word with the vendor, but in any case lifetime updates should mean lifetime updates. If you're entitled to the mp updates, and it sounds as if you are, once your plugged into Garmin dashboard, it should guide you to download Garmin Express which will handle the upset for you.

I received a replacement 660 from Garmin yesterday, now on my third.

The maps installed on the new unit were 2012.10 and Garmin express thinks they are up to date, but Basecamp has 2013.30

I tried updating the maps yesterday, and the Garmin server was down. I have a lifetime maps subscription and will try again later in the week.

Why oh why is Garmins software so shit?

I've always had a TomTom on my bikes, and really didn't want to go down the Garmin route, but had no choice with the LC. Once the maps updated (overnight), it seems to be OK. I had to buy a larger micro sd card though.

pidocks were fine about it, the box was sealed so it looks like a nav fault, taking it back monday, might whinge a bit to get some money knocked off the akra and screen
