New "old" 1150 GS

Nooobie here... hopefully picking up my '99 vintage 1150 from a dealer tomorrow and just want some advice. The bike is immaculate, with only 7,800 miles on the clock. System panniers (shaped plastic ones...they are System yes??), and if I remember correctly, engine head guards. No heated grips.
Will this be fitted with ABS by any chance?
What would you recommend as a "must buy" for it?

Didn't you think to ask before you bought it?

There are no "must" buys that you need to have.

(except for y-piece, end can, better screen, more comfortable seats, footpeg lowering kit, bigger tank, Ohlins suspension, metal panniers, additional lighting etc. etc.)

To be 100% honest, I thought only the 1200 had ABS 'till I was on here yesterday.....yeah I know...I'm a pillock

Most of the '99 bikes were supplied without ABS. These were the original shipment of dealer-stock1150s.

Hello bikermike, good to have you around too. I am also fairly new to this site and 1150 ownership (although I had an R80GS for a long time).

I am no expert but as far as I know ABS is an aftermarket option so it could be there but then it might not be. only way to know for sure is to ask the dealer\seller or know what your looking for when looking at the bike. Some real GS anorak might come along in a minute and probably say that ABS was only put on GS bikes on this and this date which is going to make me look stupid.

As a first buy must have accessory I think a lot of people on here will say you should ride the bike first and buy what's necessary but I say to hell with that, if you've got spare cash and want to get something then I would personally get some engine bars, auxiliary lighting and maybe tobinators depending on your size and if you feel you need them.

....know what your looking for when looking at the bike.

Look at the left hand side of the front wheel. If there is a cast toothed ring, about 8" in diameter, mounted near the hub, it has ABS. If the ring is not pesent, it doesn't!.

Prior to rushing out and buying an assortment of all kinds of goodies for your bike, why don't you just go out and ride it. Its great fun as it is - although I only have an unmolested 1100 - go and ride the thing.

ps welcome. Most folk in here are friendly, don't bite and give advice on anything related to the bike with care and compassion -anything else is open to question....

Goodies for the 1150GS

Don't buy anything until you have done a few miles EXCEPT solid engine protection bars. If you don't drop the bike during the first few weeks, just in the garage perhaps, you are a better man than me, Gunga Din ! Brian (ex 1150, now 1200, less problem)

How much are you going to pay?

Mines a 2000 without abs... but given the choice I'd go for one that had it.

Also heated grips... you should get one with heated grips

Extra's nowt until your ready but if you ride at night and use main beam a lot you may want to add some spots but there's no need to worry about that yet

Got it!!

Yep, picked her up today, and she looks as good as the first time I saw her!! She is a 1999 1150 GS sans ABS model ( I DID ask!!), and no heated grips, but with only 7900 miles on her (a bit more now LOL!!!) I know I've paid over the odds for her, but I'm afraid SWMBO also took a shine to her, so the choice was made for me!!
I've just ordered a pillion peg lowering kit from TT as SWMBO found the position of the standard pegs a touch on the high side.

Your amongst friends. I spent half a day looking to unbolt a LAMBDA probe from my exhaust that it didnt have anyway!

Hmmm, must haves, for me it would be some noise. Apparently a exhaust Y pice is good news for an 1150.

I'm pretty new here myself. I have some good helpful advice from here and some amusing pi55 taking too. Some reeet knowledgable folks on here. Welcome aboard.

Tyres and petrol are recommended.or it will stop or you will fall off.
Oh yes,.. some oil occasionally.
And brake pads now and again, ..or you will not stop..... and you will still fall off.

Check your oil level regularly! As your bike aint run in yet it will more than likely use a fair bit and use mineral oil, not fully synthetic!
