Back in 2001 my mate bought a new blue/white 1150GS and it was lust at first sight for me. I promptly ordered a new one.
A month later I was told delivery would be 3-4 months later than quoted....I could`nt wait that long (lifes too short) so I went in search of a used one.
I bought one that was 6 months old and looked as new. I got to take it for the day and ride its tits off to make sure it was Ok....it was and it pulled like a train having been run in and all.
(Getting to the point now)
Its 2 years old now and in the next 12 months I have to decide if I want to keep it or order a new one for next March.
The trouble is I saw Darrens new Adventure and its crazed engine casings and I`ve read so many threads featuring new bikes with surging and other problems that I`m wondering if it might be a good idea to buy 6 month old again as the bike will have been run in and sorted....what does the team think?

Dave,

1. Crazed engine casings - a new one on me, what's that?
2. Surging - not Adv specific (nor GS specific) and relatively rare (40% have experienced it, but most have been able to cure it). The twinspark may have this resolved (although no-one has sufficient data, due to low mileages on twinspark engines). Getting the twinspark engine would probably encourage me to go for new. Even if your new (or old) bike surges, budgeting for a Techlusion chip (£200 fitted at my dealer) should resolve it.

the crazed engine casings are sometimes aresult of the fuel lines leaking where the crimps have worked loose just above the RH pot

I had this debate with myself a year or so ago. In the end I knew there was nothing wrong with my 2 yr old 1150 at all so have kept it, and improved it. I absolutely believe this was the right decision.
3 yrs old now and my GS has evolved to meet my needs and is nigh on the perfect bike.

Aha! Only ever seen a 'piss stain':D Not on mine, though; spotted a fuel leak & my dealer replaced the lines & clamps the same day. Any stain/crazing would be a warranty issue anyway....

Crazed casings as a result of too much drink n drugs perhaps.

Darrens Adventure had crazing on the engine, gearbox and bevel casings.....spilt fuel..I think not.

As I said earlier, I've never heard of this happening - has he contacted his dealer? Has anyone else experienced this? My mates had bubbling on his cylinder heads (not the rocker covers) and his was one of the batch of poor fork braces - both repaired under warranty....
