New problem: faulty gear display

I'm at 850 miles so far on my 8-day old baby and started encountering a strange thing. At many points in my ride yesterday the gear display would either blank out or start showing the wrong gear. It seemed to always happen in 5th, and I would watch it blank, then come back, seemingly with no change (vibration, other switches, etc.). Sometimes it would just change to another gear, either up or down, and that screwd me up several times, looking down, it saying 4th, and trying to upshift twice. Nope.

Obvoiusly something is faulty somewhere, and obviously warranty is going to take care of it - ASSUMING they can reproduce it. Anybody else see this?

Hooked up my GS-911 to the sucker and sure nuff, there is a fault in the gear position sensor thingy, exact error:

10115: Gear Selector potentiometer
The fault is not present now.

Wandered through Max's BMW and found a "potentiometer" on one of the shift rods, so that's probably it ... ouch. Glad I'm under warranty and haven't started treating it badly yet ... ick.

gear positioning sensors

yup, i've posted on it a few times (think it's in the snagging list). i finally got it sorted last week by having 2 new gear positioning sensors fitted. moisture gets into them and wreaks some havoc meaning the computer starts showing all kinds of gears (or in your case, none at all!). only way around it is to get the sensors replaced.

I had read in a few places on F800Riders.org that folks also find that the plug has also just worked its way loose down there, as the connection faces downwards and apparently can shake free. That was on non-GS 800's, however, so not sure if that applies.

I'm heading in for my 600 mile service tomorrow so I'll just let them check it out.

I had a 5/6 flicker when going through torrential rain in France.

Hasn't happened since in wet or dry, maybe it has to be really peeing it down??

No faults showing on GS911 :D so I guess BMW cleared them at the last service.

Same issue here. Bike was not exposed to rain but at around 500 miles the gear indicator would blank, or skip around, or do things like go from 6th to 3rd on a single downshift. BMW found the issue at the 600mi service and has ordered a new potentiometer.

Supposedly there are no mechanical issues associated with this problem.

Got back from my "600" service (inexplicably performed with an odo reading 900 ;-), they noted it was a problem - no doubt based on the fault code - but tried to "reset" it to see if that would fix it. Not really sure what that means in this context - reset to some 0 reading, maybe? or just pulled it out and reinstalled, hoping for the best?

Anyway, they couldn't repro the problem after but were cool about it and acknowledged that that didn't mean anything. Sure enough, on the ride home, it goes whacko ... so yep, I have a new pot on the way as well. :clap

I've had this problem when holding a steady speed on the motorway in 6th gear in the dry -- every now and then the indicator shows 5th. A tap on the shifter gets it showing 6th again, but it caught me out once or twice.
