New spark plug leads

I have a 97 R1100gs which came to me with an IMO100r Sport, one of the plug leads was tracking out and causing a misfire.

I purchased a new lead from Motorworks, when I fitted the lead the rev counter of the IMO stopped working, the fuel consumption seemed to increase dramatically.

I fiddled with the bike for a week or so, changing the IMO for another which I borrowed from BRACKEN.

Eventually I put the old plug lead back on and the rev counter came back to life and the strong smell of fuel went away.

I am a long term experienced mechanic and I have maintained all sorts of vehicles but I am at a loss to explain why this is happening.

I know that BMW have changed the leads suppression, possibly resulting in the higher resistance of the old lead against the new but this could be down to age alone.

Has any one had anything like this and what did they do about it?

Thanks for the potential help.
