New To Garmin 2610 - Difficulties, Please Help?

Hi, this is my first post here and I was advised to come talk to you by the BMW website on Bikers Oracle.

I have recently got my 2610 and V8 Europe Maps.

I have plotted my 2000 miles route around Europe into the computer and have 144 waypoints in total.

I have tried to keep the distance between the waypoints to a minimum to ensure that the route on the 2610 is as near to what I want to do as possible.

I have transferred all of Europe onto the 2610 on the 1Gb card in it. I have then transferred my route and waypoints across.

When I go to the Route it shows that the trip is 800 miles, 66 waypoints and when it shows the entire route it just stops in the middle of Belgium.

I am obviously doing something wrong. Probably a setting, but I can't see what it is. I have tried to match the preferences as near as possible to the PC.

So, thanks for reading and any help will be really appreciated.

I'm not sure why you would want to plot a route in this manner. The 2610 has a reasonably fast processor and doesn't take too long to plot it's own route. The 2610 also 'learns' about your riding speeds and will bespoke a route that's best for you. MapSource on your PC can't do this (although you can adjust average speeds for each road type).

I would simply ask the 2610 to take you to your final destination (or your destination for that day). If you want to visit specific places en-route, add them in as Via Points.

As an aside, you should ensure that you have the lastest firmware for the 2610 (v4.80 available here). Version 9 mapping is also now available.

Hard to guess what is happening from the description BUT
Have you tried to do the whole trip as one route???
maybe you have exceeded the number of VIAPOINTS allowed in a route???
Note that waypoints are a different animal!
did you save the route in mapsource before downloading it?
saving routes is not the best feature of mapsource, it is frustrating that merging bits of routes is not easier ( I have never managed it!) So,
I suggest you retry doing a route for each day of your trip, download each route 1 at a time and see what it looks like in the 2610.
as far as I can see the mapsource will follow the route that you want it to, as long as preferences are set for the type of road you will be using eg highway/motorway or whatever...refer to setting preferences in the manual to see if you have the best fit you can get for your trip.
also check prefs in 2610 reflect those st in mapsource on your pc

I plotted the route in this way as I wanted to follow particular roads and not be taken off in different directions and onto different roads. Therefore it made sense to set the waypoints along the route.

I am running the latest firmware 4.80

I have not used any via points at all. I have just put waypoints on certain roads and let it join them together. All this works fine until you get well into the trip when it just stops. There are 144 waypoints in the route, but only 66 are crossing over.

The whole route of 2000 miles is in one file. I will break it down into 5 days and see what happens then.

I have broke it down into 5 days and it is fine now. Matches the computer perfectly.

I think I need to understand more about via points and waypoints.

When I looked at the 2610, it was trying to show the waypoints I had plotted as Via points. All very confusing.

Never mind, all seems to be ok now. Will check it over in more detail later.

Like anything it does get clearer the more you use it. Just a friendly word of warning though - be careful of Via points (ie waypoints which you want to go through) especially if you go off route and it recalculates. Eg last year I had set a route from Northern Poland to Berlin - and had marked the border crossing I wanted to use as a Via point. This worked a treat until I pulled into the first services in Germany and the unit decided that I was off route and would recalculate - the problem was that it still included the original via point ie it was sending me back down the dual carriageway to get to the border. Luckily I realised what it was doing while on the slip road so I could turn round otherwise I would have had a wasted 30 minutes and gone through the Polish border 3 times in one day.

So, if you do plot a route with via points IIWY I would check and remove any via points you have already been through.

I thought a 2GB card was required for all of Europe

Beware if that's the case and you've inadvertently left bits off that you need as you'll be navigating on the base map which has negligible detail when compared to CN v8.

I've got V8 loaded on a 2Gb card - with auto-routing it comes in at 1.8Gb give or take.

I suppose what I should have said was that I have loaded the relevant parts of Europe onto the 1Gb card. I didn't feel it necessary to put anything outside of the countries I am travelling in.

Used the system for the first time at the weekend. Plotted a route I know well on it but then dragged the lines off onto roads which I wouldn't normally use and would certainly not be selected if the system was choosing the route.

I worked really well, very impressed. I feel confident now about taking it into Europe and having it help me on the tour.

One thing I didn't realise though which I really do like is the ability to link to Google Earth on the PC.....Fantastic to see things on there.

I too plot routes that I want to travel down in the GPS. As said above, you will loose the exact route if you allow the unit to auto re-route if you go offroute. I'd advise that you turn off auto re-routing on the unit. Its then farily easy to get back on route by looking at the screen.

If you happen to go further off route and cannot get back via the screen simply mark a waypoint on the route where you want to intersect then get the GPS to route you there. You can then turn the original route back on, then bob's your uncle.

Also print out the route and take it with you c/w a set of maps. I learnt this after my original SPIII self destructed on a tour of Scotland.
