New tyres available

Well it's that time again, my tourance EXP's have had it, time for new rubber.
I have made the decision to go for full road rubber on my 2010 GSA as this is where it spends all of it's time and grip is what I am after.

I've been reading the posts on here regarding tyre choice and I visited my tyre dealer today to order some Continental Road Attack 2's.

However, also in the shop having a coffee was the Michelin rep. We talked tyres and I explained that often the latest road rubber was not available in 19" for ADV front's.

He told me that the new Pilot Road 3's were now made in 19" fronts and showed me a pair. Nice looking tyre (a little different from the norm) but dual compound and supposed to be very good in the wet.

So, I've ordered a pair, should be fitted by the end of the week.

Just another idea for those wanting road based tyres.

I was quoted, and I quote "about £250 ish fitted."

Yes, I know there are cheaper alternatives but unlike my car's tyres, I don't mind paying for the best. I always feel it would cost more when you run out of grip.

They are only a little more than the replacement Tourance's at £241.

I paid £210 for my last pair of Roadsmarts, and at the time could have got the new TR91's for £205.

i look forward to your thought,s on the pilot road 3, just about to replace my tourance exp, which i would replace again, lot,s of grip in wet or dry, just dont last long enough, But its the only bit that touches the road so i dont quibble.

Guys I have just wiped a rear tourance EXP out in 3500 miles,on my adventure 2011 when I took the bike to my local tyre dealer, the metzeler dealer was there,I had a lot of correspondence with this guy as i have just had a couple of weeks off the road due to the fact I couldnt get tyres for my k1600,metzeler were brilliant, I spoke to the guy and pointed out his tyres were crap, he had a look and confirmed that they were the soft compound, the harder option is only detectable by a red letter M in circle on the side wall, worth noting as whilst i admit i have been riding hard, this is a new bike and these are the tyres it came with so it was run in on these, I would normally expect 4,5k out of a rear, and being really honest I got 3k out of my last set of tyres on my k1600 and thats is a bigger faster bike, and does warp drive if you re planning a big trip best check what you have as these are made of butter.

Yeah, damned expensive aren't they, saw a GS with them on in the Alps, they look pretty good but unless they grip a load more than Roadsmarts or last a lot longer I will save £40 a pair.

One of the 3 faults fixed (Fork Seals) unable to identify clutch fault (probably cos they need to ride it for an hour or so to even see the fault in action, and the discs are not covered under warranty and it would appear a disc that lasts half as long as the pads may be considered normal by BMW

Back to topic has anyone worn out a set of PR3's yet, it would be interesting to see how well they last - we all know they will grip well enough.

as a point of interest my exp's both lasted 7000 miles which i thought was good,and yes i do go more than 30mph,this included a spirited euro tour including stelvio etc.

I was quite amazed by the performance of the EXP's on a recent trackday using my 2010 GSA. There is no way i could identify them as dual purpose from the seat.
Very grippy under pressure, easy knee down on a slightly damp day.
I dont really care about wear rate.
I remember my ZX12R's a set of tyres in 3 days at Cartegenna.

So just so I am clear - there are two types of EXP. A hard and a soft compound?

Well, I got 5K miles from my EXP's, and I'm happy with that. I'm not saying they are a bad tyre, far from it, it's just that as I ride on the road I prefer road tyres.
The dual purpose are always going to be a bit of a compromise in my view.

Yes the PR3's are expensive but confidence is everything in a tyre. I know I would kick myself if I paid less and was not happy with them. Time will tell I guess.....
