Hi
Can anyone help?
My daughter who is on holiday goes to University. She is now starting to panic as she can't get into her windows account.

She changed her username to get into windows. It asked for a security question. When she went back to sign on she could not use the new username. Her security question she had changed worked OK , so she used that (only as her her new username she knew anyway) put her new user name in but it did not recognise it.

So to keep it short . The Laptop will not accept the username but only the security hint.

Can anyone help please.

user error :nenau

maybe a mistake in her user name it... or password... wouldn't be the first time someone has done that
caps lock mistake?

Boot it in 'Safe Mode' log in as 'Administrator' once in she will be able to change or delete the password.

If she doesn't know how to boot in safe mode, tell her to switch the machine on and tap the F8 key a couple of times as it starts up. In safe mode the display will be very basic so tell her not to panic .

Hi
She has tried that but it just kicks her out.
All her uni stuff is on there which is a Law degree so you can imagine panic.

Someone said about downloading some Linux programme which i can put on a Stick for her but not sure what that means:confused:

She said for £15 PC world will do it.

I can understand her concerns for £15

suggest when she does get it sorted
she adds an administrator login to the computer,
give it a different password, (keep it safe and secure)
to be used in a case such as this.

....and if it's important work, and it is, BACK IT UP !!

gordo'

Sounds like a no-brainer to me :nenau

People with little or no knowledge following advice from others when so much is as stake, why is this taking so long

Have PC World improved as of late, "no brainer" seemed to be appropriate a few years ago?

Have PC World improved as of late, "no brainer" seemed to be appropriate a few years ago?

Its not the most taxing of jobs (even for PC World) but who would allow themselves the distress of screwing things up when a solution is offered for £15?

And PC World's Tech Guys won't risk losing the files for a short-cut that might work.

It's the sales staff that don't have a scooby.

Tormenting them is fun though!

If XP
1. As said above F8 login as administrator under safemode, and edit her account.

2. Download a Linux based NT boot loader. (there is a small risk of file damage with this)

3. PC World.

Vista is a ball ache, there is a boot load nt file/reg editor for it, but i cant remember what its called :( - this again has a small risk of file damage)

Tried all these and it just don't work guys.

I am off with her to PC world tomorrow. I shall tell you what happens as it's always best to go with the Engineers not the oily rags:hide

re password

Others have commented on how to get out of the problem, but:
Why have a password on it at all?
Just grief for nothing. No real security is provided, only hassle.
I can get access to any file on an xp password protected computer in seconds, so I regard a password as a nonsense.
My business computer has no password on it.
If any poor fool steals it, All the files are backed up on an external hard disk,
so I only lose a rubbish Laptop.
They can peruse my files till the cows come home, it will only bore them.
When she gets it going again, suggest she removes all passwords, & has a much more easily accessed computer.
Myke
