My Girlfriend and Her sister are heading to New York for a long weekend. Can anyone recommend decent accomodation in the Big Apple, preferably in or near Manhattan?

cheers

mike

A few suggestions :

Hudson Hotel which is on south side of Cental Park
Doubletree Suites on Times Square
Intercontinental Barclay
Hotel Elysee
Sofitel

No nice hotels are cheap in NY-it's a bit like trying to find a cheap one in London !!

For location and 'style',the Hudson looks fabulous.

I've not stayed in any of the above ,as we stay in a crew hotel when there, but various colleagues recommend all of the above.

Tell them to book room only wherever they end up as there are literally hundreds of places to eat out for brekky.

I'm in NY myself this weekend.

Hyatt New Jersey.

Personal recommendation is this one below:

I stayed here twice in 2006 and it normally offers good deals including a great breakfast buffet and free train ticket (the underground is right outside the door) which takes you under the Hudson and straight into Mid-town. It also happens to have a great skyline view over the Hudson to Manhattan.

If they come in from the Airport try to get one of the Shared buses if you are trying to save money, however with a 2 to 1 ratio on pound to dollar you should be able to stretch to a Taxi - (price is set from airports)

HTH, Nick

I spend quite a bit of time there so have a few hotels that I use. A couple questions: How long are they staying for? What kind of budget do they have in mind (I would suggest starting around2/250USD per night)? And what kind of hotel/atmosphere are they looking for? EG Thirty Thirty - has no bar or room service but is great value and across the street from a couple good places to eat and drink. The Hudson has tiny rooms including a glass wall between the bathroom and bedroom for a potentially great view. A great nightlife there with a bar, restaurant and nightclub... some would also call it a bit of a pick joint, not that I would know about that sort of thing :augie

Excellent-might have to pop in for a beer on Saturday night then !!

The biggest problem with it is that there is no where else near it. 59th and 8th isn't exactly a happening part of town yet. I spend more time down in East/West village. Have you tried the Spotted Pig? Get's quite a few brits there but has good beer (one of the few in Manhattan that actually has draught bitter), pub like atmosphere and michelin star food. The natives are also pretty friendly there...

Mav, it does have a bar but as you say it is not overly exciting. IIRC the hotel appeared in a Hollywood film - I think it was Splash the one in which Darryl Hannah is a mermaid.

If you are looking for a budget hotel (£100, ish !) try the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca.
Nice enough staff and super clean. No dining facilities or bar but loads on your doorstep.
Brilliant part of town 5 minutes from Greenwich village. Rooms on the street side are quite noisey but what the hell, it's New York.
Oh, only 10 minutes walk from the Ghostbusters fire station!!!!!!

The Soho Grand in Soho is Great ,bit pricey but you only live twice!! The Roger Williams in Mid town is good too,we did a few days in each so we could try different areas and had a great time ,its a real buzz. The upper west side near the park is also nice and cheaper ,even Harlem is all yuppied up now!! Have a great stay:thumb2
