Hi all, I am brand new to this board and this is my first post ( great stuff here btw).
I own a 2005 1200GS that is running out of warranty in 45 days. I have not had much time to ride it and embarrassed to say that it only has 1100 miles on it. My dealer here in California offers extended warranty: 36 mo warranty with a $50.00 deductible for $1434.00 or 24 mo
for $1334.00 with the same deductible.
I would like to hear back from you and get some feedback as far as prices and companies that offer extended warranty.

Regards,

Ray

For me it doesn't feel right having to pay all that extra money on what is a premium quality motorcycle with a name for reliability. :augie
Lets face it... we have already paid enough, haven't we?:rob

Sell it when still in waranty. Buy another one and stash that away in your garage again...

1100 miles .. tssss

A 12-month BMW warranty here at the end of our two-year warranty period costs £650-odd, say $1300. I didn't go for it, as I think it's a rip off. it makes a mockery of BMW's implied claim that their bikes ar epremium quality. if they felt their bikes were that good, they woudl ofer dditional warranty at a reasonabel cost.

However, they're asking you for around the same price for three years cover. I think I'd be tempted if I were expecting to keep the bike for a while.

Other insurance companies offer warranty cover, but seemingly with lots of exclusions and doubt over what is or isn't covered. I haven't bought this for a bike, but I did with a scond-hand car I bought once and upon inspection the policy was just about worthless. What it said was "you're covered against any repairs (with the exception of the engine, gearbox, clutch, electrics, steering suspension, chassis, bodywork, trim, interior, brakes and wheels) unless caused by wear and tear, poor workmanship, defective materials, poor design, use on a public road, use on private roads, corrosion or neglect."

(1,100 miles? Poor show!)

wouldn't waste my money on the extended warranty, as someone said to me yesterday, the money you save on that could go towards your next bike :D

If that's going to be typical mileage for you mate, don't bother paying the additional warranty, there's reasonable chance the bike will survive the 3 year period.:augie

Actually, It was not by choice---right after i bought it, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
All is well now and hoping for a full recovery.
My last bike (aprilia mille r) had almost 70k on it before i sold it and replaced it with the BMW.
I will start riding again in a few months--perhaps i should have mentioned that initially.

save your money and use it to fund a really good long trip somewhere you have always wanted to go ( on the bike obviously )

Try here for your warranty. I've no connection with the site blah blah blah...

http://www.warrantyworks.co.uk/

I'll be getting a warranty there on payday, hope I don't need it, and hope if I do that it works as good as it sounds.
Damned if I'd pay the theiving German fockers what they want for ONE year when I can get TWO years for half the price.
Incedentally, this seems to be where the trade go for warranties (I'm told!).:augie
Hope that helps you.

Get well soon mate, my bro in law has just had the same and made a full recovery. :thumb2

Don't waste your money on a extended warranty , with only 1100 miles on it IMHO the more expensive repairs like the final drives and oil seal problems that have been happening to a number of bikes seems more common after 12000 miles most bikes seem only to have the normal corrosion issues in the first couple of years...

With only 1100 miles on your bike its brand new not even run in ...

Speedy recovery :thumb2

Get the warranty

Difficult one this because of the low mileage but this is my take on it.

Because the bike hasn`t been used, there may be internal issues going on. Any vehicle which isn`t used regularly will suffer from all sorts of woes because they are designed to be used. The most unreliable bikes are the ones that only get used on high days or holidays!!
The warranty sounds great value because it`s manufacturer backed and they will honour claims where insurance warranties will not. Most Insurance warranties are a complete waste of money in my opinion.
Contrary to popular belief, the 1200GS is a sound and reliable bike. The reason extended warranty is expensive (in the UK) is BM* have to factor is all the things that may go wrong because some bikes will have done high mileage and they will factor in a % of failure . They are not ripping anybody off and it`s a gamble they are taking. Have you ever asked and car manufacturer for extended warranty? The more expensive the car, the more expensive the warranty because there is potentially more to go wrong. (Oh, I don`t work for BMW but used to work for a major truck manufacturer and we had endless data on this subject not just heresay.)

If I were you, I`d take the BMW extended 36 month warranty (especially at that price) and get some serious miles up on your bike knowing you have no worries. If they did that price here, I`d be first in the line to take it!! :thumb

Glad you are recovered and enjoy....

Well the quote on my BMW 3 Series was cheaper than the 1200GS:nenau
