I'll be doing Holyhead to Cheltenham Easter weekend (in the car) but I'm going to stop over for a night somewhere along the way. I could do it in one hop but the little one in the back would get pissed off cooped up in the car for 4 hours.

Figured we'd take an extra day and stay a night in Wales somewhere.

So looking at the map, Newtown looks around half way and gives me a nice spin down through Snowdonia. What's it like? Nice enough place to stay a night? Recommend any hotels there? Not really looking for any entertainment as we'd probably just bring my daughter for a walk down to a park or something.

Or would you recommend another town?

Try Rhayader, just a little further down( in Newtown turn right under the bridge and head for Crossgates then Rhayader) Ty Morgan's is a lovely B&B and the Élan Valley is on the door step, dams reservoirs and scenery aplenty about two and half hours ish.

Hi Sacha its a great part of the world if you are staying in Newtown http://www.metropole.co.uk/ its very interesting all good mind cant think of a bad place to stay along there and ensure from there you take the newtown-bullith wells-brecons-monmonth road as its fab biking road bit longer but worth it oh dear in the car:blast

Essjay.
Newtown is my second home as my missus lives there and i own a pub there.
Try googling Elephant and Castle as they have just spent over a million quid on it and its supposed to be loverly now. River views from there. Fairly good food, but if not there plenty of other places to eat.
Prettyer town than welshpool but not that much to do.but ok for a stop over.
Hope that helps R.B

My wife's from there, stayed there a few times. Nice enough place but not much to do except go to one of the plentiful pubs.

Yep, go from Newtown to Crossgates, then wish you were on the bike all the way(not a very good road at all that one:rolleyes:) Then turn right to Rhayader, stay the night then through the Elan valley.

Top tour:beerjug:

Yep, A483 from Newtown to Crossgates is great, then turn off for Rhyader and run through the Alan Valley to Devils Bridge, then work your way back to Newtown - a wonderful 100 mile run, the Valley bit is very slow so allow about 3 hours, especially as you may want to take a pic or two.
