Hi guys,

Have had an issue with my R1150GS 2003 model.

The issue started with the bike cutting out at speed and stalling at junctions , suggested by forum members to clean the connector under tank , did this and seemed to get better , but the faults returned stalling at junctions when slowing down , but would start again and all would be ok for a bit until next junction.

So I decided to clean the BBS and flush the hole through , this done tried to balance the throttle bodies but couldn’t get it to tick over and the BBS’s were only about a quarter of a turn out . So then I changed the o rings on the BBS’s and the vacuum take off bungs , checked the stick coils using a meter they were outside the tolerance so replaced them as well . Still no joy the bike ticks over gets slower and slower then when you twist the throttle it pops and bangs and either cuts out or ticks over , so checked all breathers on the tank and found one blocked by a couple of dead bugs , I blew up it towards the tank could hear air entering the tank and returning out .

So I gave it a good look over and there appears to be petrol staining on the crankcase underneath where the fuel pipes disappear towards the fuel meter .

Any ideas would be welcome , thanks in advance .

Steve

Have you tried testing your stick coils? Lots of info on here about how to do that. I had a similar problem which only came on when the bike was warm - it was the lambda probe. Just disconnecting it immediately cured the problem.

Long shot, wiring round headstock all ok as that can cause chaos!

Thanks for the replies .

Yesterday took all connectors and cleaned them all wiring around headstock checked one wire had cracked rejoined this , all the insulation encasing this part of the loom disintegrated , too many years in the desert I suppect . Then inspected all wiring from stick coils etc found another cracked /corroded wire earthed to left hand throttle body repaired this , checked valve clearances balanced throttle bodies able to achieve steady tick over , happy days .

Just been out for a test ride all seems ok no issues as before , I suppose the bike is still acclimatising to sunny and damp Spain.

Thanks for all suggestions advice .

Steve

Nice one - and at least it didn’t set itself on fire like my old 1100 did...
