hi all from snowy Warsaw :)
here is my story
r1150gs adv 2003 around 45kkm on a clock.
Few days ago removed gas tank to replace hoses, actually one hose. Today put tank on its place, tried to run but nothing. Dont know why, but first checked spark plugs. No sparks. Removed tank again, opened book, schematic and ukgser.com. Found some infos about Hall effect sensor. Decided to check it out.
First Hall sensor plug: 4 wires red+ brown ground etc. Brown wire is grounded so ok. But red... No voltage after turn on ignition. Discinected big plug from motronic. By ohmometer checked all 4 wires and they are ok.
Second Hall sensor. Disconected battery from the bike. Wired directly positive and negatice from battery to Hall sensor plug. Voltmeter betwen + and upper (later lower) Hall sensor. Crancked by wrench and? Had 12v every turn. On lower and upper sensor.
What is the problem? It happened sudenly. Motronic? Count on your help.
p.s. sorry for my poor English :)
have a nice weekend - Romek

No spark you say but HES are ok?

Measure the coil resistance on both primary and secondary winding.

See page 5 here.

If the coil is ok, measure the voltage on the connection that plugs into the primary coil and see if there is any activity there.

Let us know how it works.

Have you checked to see if your injectors are firing? If they are it rules out hall sensor. 2003 could be a single spark? Maybe your coil has broken or dodgy HT leads?

I've got a similar problem at the moment. Bike decides not to start.

No spark at plugs or injectors not firing. Replaced hall sensor. Nothing.

Replaced motronic and that didn't fix it either.

The motronic was a stab in the dark. The BMW garage in the UK hadn't replaced one in the last 8 years or so, its very rare they go wrong.

You've had the tank off.

What's changed ?
What have you disturbed ?
Check all your connections.

my one is twinspark. Dont know how to check coils for "central" spark plugs, but checked coils for bottom ones. Primary has 0,5 Ohm secondary 7,1 k Ohms. Checked on two multimeters and was the same. Yeee, activity. Sure, after iignition on, there is 12v.

@sockpuppet
didnt check. Removed spark plugs, and smelt gas. So looks like injectors working.

@AberdeenAngus
checked every connection (hope).

On red wire in HES plug there is no voltage. Im not sure it should be or not.
Thanks for replies and waiting for more :)

My mates 1100RS had sparks and fuel injecting but wouldn't run, that was caused by a failed hall sensor.

Info on hall sensors here: http://www.ebbo.org/2av54.php

But I'd test the coils, connections and voltages before blaming the HES

hmmm, how can I say that ...
Sparks appeared :) On a center plugs. Dont know yet why. Did two things:
a. removed coils to check it (this coil for bottom spark plugs)
b. disconected and clean every plugs under gas tank.
Crancked and sprks came back. Tried without coil, see "a".
Let me know to make a cup of coffee, the will put back coil and the winner is ??

Im afraid it looks like dirty connections somewhere. Thanks again, but it is not end of the story :)

I've had a couple of those type of failures -also one that started and idled, but slightest touch of the throttle and it died, hall sensor tested ok.
But it turned out it was the hall sensor.

happened the same on a friend's rs 1100 an it was the water in the tank :|

Solved! One of plugs under gas tank. Which one? Who knows :) Have sprk on all spark plugs. Thanks for help. Romek
