So the bold boy has landed a job in the area and is looking for digs for a while before he finds a place to rent or (gulp) buy. Totally house trained with only one shameful habit - he rides a Harley!

Any advice re affordable / non crime infested areas? Info re possible digs welcome also.

If you want to minimise the commute Warminster is the best bet. The town centre pubs leave a bit to be desired, featuring a mix of pissed off locals and pissed up soldiers. There are a couple of good village pubs in the area (Heytesbury and Upton Scudamore), and down the bottom of town there are a couple of pretty reasonable pizza and curry take-aways. John Loftus is an honest letting agent for property; I let my last house there through them, and prices are relatively low. There's also a train station with direct links to Salisbury and Bath.

Otherwise, the options are:
- Westbury. Only old people live there (seriously) and there's relatively little to appeal about the place.
- Frome. Not much there, and even more detached from the real world.
- Salisbury. Great small city, has everything you might normally want without being huge.
- Shepton Mallet. Middle of nowhere.
- Trowbridge. Concrete, not terribly aesthetic, but functional.
- Amesbury. Small town, not a lot of character, but functional and 2 very good curry houses. Lots of new-build property, still being built, so rental and buying prices aren't stupidly high.

There are loads of trails in the area for mountain bikes and motorbikes (not a Harley though...), especially if you head east towards Shrewton, Durrington and Tidworth.

Random brain dump, but let me know either here or via pm if you want to know anything more specific.

Google either 'Camelot properties' or 'protection by occupation' for cheap accommodation across the UK. It has its drawbacks but I lived on their scheme for three years in a variety of properties. As above, PM for more details.
