After the kids managed to download an assortment of viruses from the internet, I have installed Norton anti Virus and PERSONAL FIREWALL.

Both seem to be working fine, but I have a query with the wastebasket.

It has now re-named itself 'Norton Protected Wastebasket'

When I click on it, it says that I have 1500 'protected' files on the computer, all dated since installation of the software. It also talks about 'Unerase Wizard'

Can anyone advise where these have come from, why so many, how did they get there, and can I safely delete them?

Cheers

PS If I delete a document in the normal way, I can still remove it from the wastebasket by right clicking on it, and this does not seem to affect these 1500 'protected' files.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am a complete novice on these computer things.

The "Norton Protected Wastebasket" just means that the system is now trapping all deleted files on your computer, not just the ones you delete from teh Windows desktop. This means all the temporary files, autosaves, work files, logs, kitchen sinks, tin baths etc that every program that runs creates are now held on to when the program finishes with them. Normally only things deleted from the desktop or thereabouts gets into the wastebasket.

There are always around 1500 of them hanging around when I remeber to clean mine up. Delete away, there won't be any hassle.

I think there is something in the Norton Utilities setup that allows you to switch it off - if it bugs you do so, otherwise ignore it and just clear it out occasionally.

RMC on the desktop icon and select Properties - then choose the tab "Norton Protection" and untick "Enable Protection"
