Well. not as such. (though struggling to find 20/50 locally for my 2001 GS) 80,000 miles.
But on some of the oil threads there's mention of using semi or fully synthetic oil after a certain mileage.
I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of oil, so was wondering why it would be after a certain mileage that this is "ok"

Is there any benefit to semi or semi synthetic in these engines?
Also, if you pop a 15/40 oil in say, instead of a 20/50, are they actually noticeably noisier as some say, or is it just a placebo type effect ?
I like a quiet engine .....

I owned a 1150GS for over 10 years. It was originally serviced by BMW dealers using the then recommended 10W/40. Oil consumption was over half a litre of oil between services. Around 24k they started using 20w/50 oil and oil consumption was minimal, especially in the hotter weather of Southern Europe. I was able to stop taking oil with me on trips.

At 36k servicing was done by an independent who used Valvoline VR1 20w/50 - again, no topping up needed between services. The bike was sold with over 50k on it after more services by the same chap.

I have no idea if any of the oils used were mineral or synthetic and cared not a jot about noise. I was just pleased the bike stopped using oil between services. If I still had that bike and did my own service I'd just use the cheap Castrol GTX in the white pack for about £10 for 4 litres - these engines have dry clutches so any old car oil will do that meets the SE spec in the handbook. I'd draw the line at the "classic" oil in B&Q or Halfords that do not quote a spec on the label.

Hi Spud,
I've used Rock Oil Guardian 20w50 semi synthetic in my 2001 1150GS for at least the last 10 years. Now on 198K.
Would recommend it - should be easy to source near you.

Cheers........... Grizzly

Hi Grizzly, That's as good a recommendation as it gets !!
I hope you're keeping well, (We met at Applecross last year, I had the Blue and White one !!)

I didn't think the old Catrol GTX met the SE spec.

Find yourself a small motor factor/independent car spares shop, usually plenty around, our local one does Morris 20/50 of the right spec for about £16 for 4 litres
