Anywhere but here!
Got my Zumo 660 last week and straight out of the box it worked great.

However, I thought I'd register it on the Garmin website and download the latest maps, software and Mapsource.

After much pressing of buttons I feel confident on how it works, but there are some things about it that I can't understand.

1. When new data (routes or waypoints) is loaded onto the unit, on startup it comes up with a message stating that it's found the data and do I want to import it. Eh? of course I do, that's why I put it there!

2. If I sort out the routes I want in Mapsource, why does the unit then recalculate the route on first startup, after it's been imported? It mostly ends up with a route I don't want it to do! It's got the same version of maps in Mapsource and the 660.

3. If I load a picture onto an optional SD card, why does it then have to copy it into the main memory on the unit in order to view it? Whats the point of that?

4. Why hide the main user manual on the Garmin website somewhere? It's not much use, as if you load optional maps, such as Olaf's Marokko-Topo there are no instructions on how to remove them later. I found the answer though, it's hidden in a file called gmapsupp.img and you need to delete the file to remove the optional maps!

Note for Garmin. What's the point in supplying a mains charger that won't work in the usb port on either the car cradle or motorcycle. The only usb port it will work on is under the battery cover!

waiting for mine to be delivered.hope i don't have the same probs:(

There's something funny with imported routes. A few of us on Wapper's jaunt around the Pas-de-Calais last weekend imported his routes only to find that they were a sucession of straight lines between points - even though they didn't show as such when viewed on the PC. By 'recalculating' the route on the Zumo, it all came good, but this should be needed.

Might be worth pinging your experience into Garmin Support and see what they have to say.

I don't know if it's a temporary quirk with the 660, created by recent software upgrades, but you MUST adopt the following method of route file transfer for the time being, else it won't work. Trust me on this...5 hours later......

1. Send relevant route file to the 660 (not the Micro SD card), via MapSource and 'Send to Device'
2. Unplug the USB cable (you MUST transfer each file separately and follow the next steps before you send the next file, else the last one copied overwrites the previous one )
3. When the Garmin finishes booting, wait for it to display "The imported routes were calculated with different maps. Would you like to recalculate the routes?". Hit NO (if you don't get this message, ignore the following, as you should be ok, but I'd be interested to see how many need to adopt this method)
4. Hit 'Tools', 'Custom Routes'
5. Select the name of the route you've just transferred
6. Hit 'Edit'
7. Hit 'Delete' and 'Yes'
8. Hit 'Back' , scroll down, hit 'My Data'
9. Hit 'Import Data' and 'Favourites'
10. Hit 'Select All', and hit 'Import', and then 'OK'
11. Hit 'Routes' and follow 10, above.
12. Hit 'Back', 'Back', scroll up, hit 'Custom Routes'
13. select the route name you've just created, and hit 'Preview'
14. This can take a little while to draw, but gives you an overview of the whole route, with a much reduced number of via 'flags'

If I remember right - there is a difference in copying a file to the main memory and copying it to the SD card...

Think I may have found a problem. :augie

The latest software apparently is 3.50 but it appears my unit is using an older version.

I used WebUpdater version 2.4.2 but it says I'm using the latest software! On the unit, if I go to tools, settings, system, about, the software versions on the unit are:

GPS: 2.90
DSP: 2.20
Text: 2.60 (British English)
Voice: 1.90 (British English-Emily
Mount: 0.0

I forced the unit to reinstall the "latest" software using WebUpdater, but still get the results above. How do I update the unit to the latest version 3.50 then?

Can someone else see what versions they're using?

Roy

Mine also showed that, but elsewhere on the unit it does say 3.50. Have a grub around.

To see the software version touch the battery level display at the top of the screen and hold your finger on it for about 6 or 7 seconds. You will get a screen with loads of technical info about the unit. Software version is on the top line.

Just for anyone else reading this thread, yes you are running 3.5, you are just looking in the wrong place for the version number. All those numbers above are correct.

It might have been useful when you realised your mistake to come back here and tell everyone, rather than just starting another thread on the same Importing problem :rob i.e :

If you really want to get to the bottom of this problem, come over the the Zumo Forum, where there is chapter and verse on this. It's free to join:

There is actually a very quick, and much easier way, to see the version number. Tools, settings, system, about.
