Not really a road trip, apart from it's a trip on the road...

Frankfurt job was delayed, so we had to hang about... that took ages to sort out, then we had a drop off for a client "as favour" mental note we don't do them anymore...!

35 hours and about 1300 miles.... later, after having seen 6-8 serious crashes on the various motorways and getting held up for several hours while looking a wrecking crews drag stuff off the road.... we're now at base camp 1.

the left hand edge is for camper vans, open hard standing with power hock ups. The ground in the second strip of lawn is firm..... for campers...

after having seen 6-8 serious crashes on the various motorways

Which rather puts the lie to the oft repeated: The standard of driving on French and German motorways is much higher than it is in the UK.

:beerjug:

so I've been watching and rewatching the Mark Felton pieces about the northern rat run....

as we're now starting to gear up for the July trip to Germany and to look for more good stuff....

and cake, coffee, schnitzel, beer... which brought back and I've now drunk....

Saved to watch later

I don't wanna start the arguement about the /they/ them.... but.... the poor eastern europeans should remain poor and be forced to stay in the slow lane and on donkey carts..... for one simple reason they have no business in the fast lane...! it would appear they don't handle stress or speed well...

most of the crashes involved romanian registered vehicles trying to reach speeds which suggest they want to break some national speed record or get into outer space generally to sell heather to ET....

The volume of current traffic is such, the previous god given right to drive like you own the road, can't really be continued. The A7 the usual flat and fast well maintained... but with loads of deer and boar in the woods and when Bambi or porkie fancies a head on with a car doing 150mph it's not gonna end well for Herman, the car or the wildlife and looks like a badly wrapped un-cooked Kebab that smells of hot iron.... and shit....

Best of all it's not rained in weeks 6 or more, so I pitch the tent in the dark after a shuffle waddle to workout if there's any hollow spots....on my chosen spot of partched earth it all seemed fine... 03.00 woke up thought man that's alot of insects.... but my superior interlect worked out your near a large body of water, your gonna get them it's a nature reserve it's all about the bugs and stuff... yup don't worry

Well it's rained/ it's still raining and the small hollow yup has turned into a paddling pool... inside my tent... nice

i've shuffled my world chattles on the highest bit to escape the biblical flood....

I need a beer....

still ticking along, however we've hit a small snag there's no electric... so tomorrow `i need to go on the hunt for power to charge up the kit....

or we'll need to employ yuri geller to be able to make the next leg

This is pretty much the summary of the journey.... We saw the big fire in the eifel region between Germany and Belgium, on a couple of days we had 40-45 degrees...

the countryside looked very much like a bleached southern spain and dry as a tinder box ....

a few decent crashes to keep the driving interesting and real, plus a few odd motoring incidents... which are hard to explain... other than some people just should not be given a driving license... now gonna catch up on some sleep....

That is indeed a big fire, being fought with equipment from as far away as Sweden, under an EU ‘natural catastrophe’ mutual support scheme.

so how do I wrap this up, and tidy away my thoughts....

well for starters post 14 sums it up...

All treasure hunts shown on many of the TV channels, are geared towards Bavaria and to this day I have no idea why. If the breakdown of the war in it's final phases... suggests anything then it's ...

The escape to the south was impossible the only path open was to the north, the submarines in the Geltinger Bay where there, then that's an easy out to anyone with the money or a gun and the desire to leave in a hurry... If the bridges got destroyed and the river Elbe and the KWK (kaiser wilhem kanal/ Baltic Navigation Canal) slowed down progress it also slows down anyone that's chasing after you....!

Schleswig Hostein was the very last outpost but of Mainland Germany to effectively be taken and brought under the control of the British/ Allied Forces...

Schleswig Holstein is seen as a slow paced back water, that has some of the most dangerous curvy roads you can imagine... cos as residents they don't expect anyone to be hooning it around there, It's the only place in Germany "which is a massive Country!" Where you can have breakfast by the Baltic and lunch or mid morning coffe by the North Sea in equally quirky yet different villages and towns... There's places that are quirky oldy worldy and that are empty apart from a bakery, selling coffee, cakes or assorted sanwiches which are spot less waiting for the holidaying hordes that never seem to arrive...

It's got an air of age and silent relentless history about it, where you can ask a question and you'll get an answer if your ready or not... these can both blunt and honest in their delivery. Alot of folks aren't able to cope with that anymore, that level of frankness that comes from living in a harsh termain in thw winter where the wind blows in straight from Russia...

As for the personal stuff, I still have family out there... and like all families there are issues long seated dark aspects of things that happened many many years ago and by their nature can't be simply resolved... they've become an unpleasant mess with the usual it's everyone else's fault apart from the person who's recounting the tale of misery.... then again growing up there, and the story of how I ended up here, and left here, to go to other places made me who I am.

I can't blame them for being the arseholes that they clearly are... then again they now claim I'm the arsehole... which makes me laugh cos I've accepted that mantle along time ago...

Which really only leaves one thing.... was there a treasure to be found

On the balance of probability and using the facts to hand and cribbing other people's more interlectual and published work, I've learnt that "yes" the english where hiding in our woods, they took over someone else's defensive position that covered a crossroad/ access road to that area. The next question well was it them?, that robbed the german royals amongst others.. up in Flensburg, I can't be sure but there's a good chance of it being them or someone close to them, as there's can't have been than many units creeping about looking for high value targets or other things of value.... As the area wasn't cleared out and the handover of weapons didn't take place for a good while later. Which suggests this area was in an uneasy peace with armed german units and an assortment of English units cutting about.... Using the only decent road that went south to north that passed near to our farm, woods and fields and was far enough to stop for the night and by rights would have made a good stop on the way back cos you know where it was and what to expect.

pictures and explanations for what we got, the place still needs a more complete survey... cos you can't do it all in a few days

This is a very good summary of the canoe part of the trip, we started in Maasholm top right side, then canoed down the fjord the only and therefore the longest in Northern Germany.

This was the one constant story in history lessons, the Vikings use the Schlei as a natural harbour and setup a trading settlement at Haitabu (on the banks of the Schlei and Danewerk which is a little bit further in land on the crossing point of the "Ochsenweg" (cattle drovers path which runs north south from Danmark and more or less down to Rome and beyond to Spain)

The fjord is about 50Km long, around 1000m wide in many places, less than 100ish meters at the narrowest point in Missunden and the two widest expanses are know as Grosse bereit (big wide bit) and kleine Breite (small wide bit) which are several KM across... and in a small canoe these are so big you can't really see the edges or identitfy where your heading. Also there's waves.... ranging from small 50cm enough to break over the top of a canoe and soak you.... to much bigger which makes it feel like your canoeing uphill....

we had to get out of canoes in Schleswig Harbour then overland to Hollingstedt, get into the river system at first the Treene a slow flowing river, that has million corners and your paddleing into a head wind atleast 50% off time.... again just a physical challenget that drags on.... for much longer than anyone expected...

the Treene (river) joins the Eider bigger (river) that eventually flows into the North Sea but is controlled by a flood protection barrier, which I couldn't workout how to get past without getting arrested... or killed... cos it's got a hell of a flow there, being tidal

We called it a day in Friedrichstadt aka little the Holland town, historically one of the dukes of schleswig, thought it was a good idea to get into lace making so imported a load of folks from holland who where either menanites or hutterites (religious people and lace makers, who then later cleared off to the US)

All treasure hunts shown on many of the TV channels, are geared towards…..

They shot an entire programme, telling how the Holy Grail is thought to be buried in rural Warwickshire. Part of it was filmed on my brother-in-law’s farm, much to the family’s amusement. Naturally enough, it featured interviews with every nutter and conspiracy theorist and the usual, self proclaimed ‘expert’ on ley lines.

I told my niece, then about 12, to make one, Blue Peter style. And then walk past in the distance.

Happy days.
