I have a 2 year old 1150 Adv and a lot of it's miles have been covered fully loaded two up on the standard seat with a sheepskin cover, 500+ mile days are very easy and it lugs 2 weeks worth of camping gear plus us without issues, all I do is wind the rear pre load up to full and run the tyres a bit higher (In fact it stays like this all the time) The limiting factor for me is how long I can put up with the wife prattling away on the intercom.....

ditto,

Six year old R1150GS 29k miles standard bike, 20 of the 29k are my miles for the last two years. I do same as above and have had no problems.:thumb2

Hey Brewster and LetshuntsomeOrc, I'm over in Derby.
Our bike club always meet at lumb Farm, Ripley on Sunday night about 8:30 if you fancy a ride out for a pint and a natter. Three of our members have 1200GS's.

Thanks for the invite Demongroover,
I know the Lumb Farm well, mainly from my 'youth' when I used to drink in the area on Friday and Saturday nights....;)

Just a quick update, managed to get to Pidcocks yesterday and had a look at several used and new bikes. They certainly have a presence and after sitting on one I didn't have any trouble balancing it, or feel I couldn't handle it.

Got the full gen on what a GS or GSA would cost....and unfortunately not likely too have many discounts....thick end of 10 grand would obviously secure a GS with ABS and a few other goodies, the GSA looking at over 11 grand for a similiar spec...is it worth it? Well everyone has an opinion no doubt, but until I've taken one of these brutes out for a test drive I can't really comment on that one.

Hopefully arranging a test ride this weekend (unlikely) or next weekend (more likely).
My heart kinda says GSA, love the big attitude and footprint on the road, but my head says GS as I was told bit better handling on the road, slightly stiffer suspension settings.
Will keep you all informed, and thanks for the feedback guys......:bow

Cheers, Neil.

If you are a chunky chap you may find the basic GS suspension a bit on the soft side especially when two up, this leaves you winding the preload up to give better ground clearance/handling and so have a harsher ride, on the GSA the suspension can be left at a more plush setting for comfort while the extra height gives better ground clearance, the slighly more pliant suspenders on the gsa also give better grip on acceleration over a bumpy/slippy surface IMO

The Basic GS wins on sharper handling (with the back jacked right up it steers very well for a bike of its size) and being lighter, slightly better performance.

I've had both models, and although the GSA is a bit tall for me, the tank range, suspension, better luggage and better overall ridability means if the choice had to be made again, it would have to be the GSA again for me.

Thanks for the replies guys....much appreciated.

Dave...yes they do still have the 1150 adventure at Pidcocks, according to their website anyway.

Cheers, Neil.

no thats gone but they do have another black one on an 05 plate with less than 2500 miles

So long as you never owned a 'K' or an 'Airhead' you will be fine.

If you have, you are going to be desperately disapointed by the 'buld' quality.

Hi Neil,
wel i bought a 2004 1150 gsa in midnight black,25k,love it to bits.
Developed a thrumming in 4th gear, stripped down box, nothing wrong.putting it back together now, lets hope its gone, inside of gearbox was like new.
clutch hydraulic pipe has rotted through on slave cylinder, bmw engine protection bars have broke where they mount to the frame, not pleased, a job for the mig welder.
a word of caution,i bought my bike from outside of the BMW dealer network, BMW will NOT entertain any goodwill claims on this basis.
if i had bought from BMW ,even though nearly three years old they would have done a goodwill claim on these bits.oh and one of the front discs was worn oddly at 16000 mls, needs new disc and 2 sets of pads.careful what you buy, beware!!!
good luck, Paul.take one these gs geesas with you when you buy.
p.s sad but true, i love playing with it!!!:mcgun
