……this airhead thing. Done a few hundred miles on it now and I absolutely love it. Had oil heads and still got my wet head but there is something about this bike I adore. I can’t put my finger on it and frankly don’t care, I haven’t ridden my LC since I’ve had this on the road, it’s not perfect but maybe that’s what I love about it.

I have an R80GSPD in the same livery.
These are the last of the GS Airhead models, before BMW added more and more heft and complexity, detrimental to what I think, made the original GS and G/S (and ST!) models so uniquely appealing.

The very last of the airhead GS models was the Basic ( and kalahari in SA)
1996, one year only, and apparently only about 3000 ever made.

Of course, the Basic was the very last model and a fine model at that.
My 1992 R80GS PD is one of only 420 produced (apparently), if it's a race to the bottom of production numbers you're after....

Wow!
Didn’t know they only made so few of the r80gspd…..now that’s a rare BMW airhead!
Great bike too!

Ride safe

Great that the OP has now been hooked on the drug that is airhead gs ownership…… there is no known cure ( thankfully)
They are a wonderful way to travel, not fast by todays standards, but they have soul and character that’s sadly lacking from todays more efficient, faster, modern bikes.

Ride safe, and enjoy the wonderful airhead.

When we were up in N Finland and N Norway this last Spring, we kept bumping into a Welsh chap and his Greek wife, touring on an old airhead. They had it piled high with 2 peoples kit and two peoples camping stuff....they'd left a Suzuki V-Strom 1050 at home in favour of the 35 yr old airhead. Just a lovely way to travel was how he described it.

Have airheads and bought a V-Strom off here a couple of years ago and sold after a couple of months, The V-Strom is far superior, but just did not have the analogue feel and look of a classic bike, i am maybe vain or just getting old and like to get on my bike (which is a hobby) and remove myself from modern day gadgets, ride and use the skills given to me to navigate myself about without something helping out.

I know how you feel, really like mine, full of character and distinctiveness and a great noise.

A lot of current bikes are different coloured, homogeneous versions of the same concept with little to distinguish between them until you look down to see what the badge says, very efficient and capable, but somehow lacking in soul. I have one though as it serves a purpose, no question.
