Had my 950sm for about 3 months now and totally love it, its the best twin ive ever ridden. Earlier this year the decision was made to make my milleR a track only bike, so I could then try and up my game abit by using track only tyres to forget about compromise trying to use tyres which would also be good on soaking roads. My first choice was the Tuono but I thought I would also try the 950SM, ruling out the superduke cos of tank range and reported poor fuel injection. My test ride on the 950 was booked, I rode it as hard as I could up the A6 from Kendal then back in the same manner, placed the deposit there and then. The KTM is double smooth, the brakes are the best ever, its not the most stable bike but the 'loosness' just adds to the excitement you get from riding it, at over £1500 cheaper than the Tuono and needing no mods to smooth out fuelling dips I was sold.
The 950 is definately not a supermoto, its more of a Tuono/Monster type of bike but with bigger suspension, its definately not a sports bike, or on fast smooth roads, a sports bike beater. Every one who has ridden mine agrees its difficult to choose your riding style, best bet is to chop and change with your mood or road type. I don't ride in cities so can't comment, I do ride on varied roads, the 950 is a total delight, not fazed with rough surfaces, shit or gravel, and at lower speeds it remains comfortable. I recon on my mille I could ride 100plus miles for 20-30miles of pure fun, sports bikes are only fun when they are on their ear and your at your limit, the risks on license and life have made me change my view and lower my speed so a sit up bike which is exciting to 130mph,a one which doesn't beg for 3rd/4thgear smooth corners is the way to go. By the way I live in Northumberland, 3 miles off the A686, we are not short of good roads, also I don't dismiss sports bikes and it could just take a phone call/sunnyday/mood change and the 950 could be changed for a RC8/K6/Blade...
In july I took the 950 round the Highlands with 8 of my Aprilia riding mates, 90% of the time I had no problem keeping up, only the 120+ sections showed its lack of speed and stababilty, the weaves were entertaining I got gapped a few times but never left behind and when I was leading managed to loose one or two of my mates. The furthest ridden in one day was 450miles and apart from a sore arse I was fine, I had the gell seat and I'm fitted with natural padding
For a perfect bike one which was to remain standard, it hasn't taken long for bits to start arriving, Akra cans,16tooth front sprocket, top box, plastic's. The black is too black and the orange, well too orange, so I have a black bike with orange handguards, rad scoops and tail piece. The original tyres lasted less than 2000miles and ex mille 208RR's are currently in use, next set will be as original as they were erm more stable.
Problems so far, just the starter torque limiter giving up the ghost, warranty job, the fix includes new lhs engine casing and upgraged torque limiter, a 1 hour job.
I had a 1200GS last year, which I used with my girlfriend, we have a baby now and another one on the way,so I sold the GS, I would of kept it, but it wasn't exciting enough for me.
So if you want a bike which is not the fastest out there but can be fun on varied types of road, one which has a good tank range and is also comfortable, the 950sm could be for you. Oh and it comes with the best vee twin motor, best brakes, quality supsension......
