has anyone looked at the idea of using an o2 xda as the map display for a gps?
i need a new phone, and while this one isn't the cheapest it does potentially give me a proper real-time mapping system (when used with anquet maps) AND a phone, that i can mount on my bike.
i'm hoping that the XDA will fit in touratech's palm case and that there's a lead out there which will connect both for data and power (off the auxillary socket).
Dave, as an aside re the XDA - I've had one for over a year, thinking that it would save me having to carry 2 bits of kit around (ie PDA & phone).
As a PDA it's very good - as a phone it's barely adequate. It struggles to get a decent signal (when other phones on the same network are fine) and isn't easy to use, IMO. It's also not Tri Band (although I believe the new XDA 2 is...) - so I had to get a Tri Band phone to take with me to the USA - worth considering if you travel abroad a lot.
I haven't seen TT's Palm Case, but the external aerial on the XDA (unique in a PDA, AFAIK) means it doesn't generally fit in a case that hasn't been made specifically for it...
I appreciate the above doesn't answer your GPS question, but I thought I'd point out the shortcomings I'd found in the XDA so far...
Yup...what Mike said.....and the GPRS is even worse...mine drops in and out of reception seemingly at random.....
And the thing doesn't half emit some RF noise!!!
Mine's in its synch cradle on the desk here and if i forget to turn the power off on my speakers , it sometimes wakes me up with its interference causing the buz-bu-buzzbu-bu noise.....all mobiles will cause this to some degree but the poxy XDA is ten times worse.....
The belt holster's are pants too...i've broken three so far...and you look like a total tit with the thing held against your ear 'cos it's so big.
I have no evidence to support this but the guy who demoed them to us advised thatthey shouldn't be used in any sort of ebven vaguely hostile environment.........they're obviously not even slightly splash proof and he said he'd had a couple go faulty from even minor vibrations...........
