Theres been a lot of post regarding how accurate or not, the GS speedo is, but have any of you GPS equipped guys checked the mileage.
According to my cheap push bike computer my speedo not only reads fast but my odometer clocks the miles up quicker to, which is great for working out fuel consumption but not for accuracy.

Easy solution is to fit the speedo drive from the R1100R. It costs about £32 new. Accuracy is much improved. My speedo was reading 118mph against a GPS reading of 115. Odometer accuracy is much better too.

Mine was 12% fast when compared to the GPS, it was replaced under warranty by BMW for the R1100R one , its now just 2% fast which is acceptable.

PS

The GS speedo hub is marked 3.0 - 1 the one you want is marked 2.9 - 1

Go see your dealer

Think i'll do that, cheers guys

Apart from the increased mileage that you're bike will have on its clock what is the big deal. Just makes you safer as you think your doing 80 wherase your only doing 70...
Good for me..
Not worried about the bikes mileage as I intend to keep it...

A few reasons, one a company with the engineering reputation that BMW have "should" be able to supply an odometer that is accurate.

I like to keep track of my mileage on tours, I use the bikes main speedo & trip plus a cycle computer for this, and when one is so far out for the other its not excactly accurate.

And when the speedo's says 80 I know im only doing 70, Ive not found it powers of persuasion that strong.

Stef, I agree that it's crap I'm just saying that for me its no big deal. Still if the solution costs £32 thats bad but not too bad... Or £32 towards that GPS that you've always wanted.
Happy riding

Quite suprised its that cheap myself, I tend to ride without looking at the speedo, much, (waits for the RoSPA mob to join in ):P I tend to ride at a pace that feels comfortable and depending on my mood, I do find myself going slower than I used to on my Trophy 1200, but I think thats down to the more relaxed nature of the GS engine.

GPS is on the wish list, thats why I bought a GS in the first place found trying to read the map in my tank bag whilst riding would end up in un-expected off road excursions so thought I better get a bike with off road capabilitys :D

I found out mine was way out when wjile out on an IAM observed ride the observer commented I could be going a bit quicker, with 33 on my dial his read 27, to progress at 33 I had to have 38 on the dial, too much error for comfort, but now 80 on the dial is 76 on the satnav, BMW have acknowledged this is unacceptable & will replace under warranty but if you have no reference point you don't know.

My bikes a 96 do you think I'kk get a waranty claim :D

My 650 GS odometer loses a mile every time I turn the ignition off.

I've mentioned before that when I'm trail riding stopping to open gates (pick meself up off the floor etc!) I can finish the trail before I've started! Trip meter runs true.

I don't think mine is the only 650 to do this, but once noticed it's a real pain.

307

cuaght an episode of "Watchdog" the other night apparently the Peugeot 307 is one of the worst for excessive millage roughly 20% high, not only that but one guys car jumps up 3 miles every time he closes the door

Strange thing. I fitted an 1100R drive to my GS. Now the bike is slower, and my fuel consumption has gone up!!!!!!!!

;) ;) ;)
