Morning all,

I've never really ridden my R1150GS (or anything else) off road. I have ridden on deep sand (an experience I'm keen never to repeat), across the grass for a few 100 metres to get to camping spots and along Russian gravel roads, but I have no real idea what I'm doing.

I'd like to take the bike out and ride off road to get some experience. I'm not looking to become an expert, just to decrease the "oh f*ck" feeling :)

Repeated experience being the key IMO, are there any rides out being organised from this board that might be suitable for someone of my experience level and that might help me acquire better experience? Preferably without any great likelihood of totalling the bike :)

Cheers

Do a course

Best I could recommend is getting some proper instruction by doing a course. The BMW offroad skills course in Wales is a very good one, Im sure there are others. They seem expensive at first, but when you take into account that it will be somebody elses bike you will be breaking while you are learning, you could save yourself a lot of dosh "experimenting" with how to ride offroad, and dropping your own bike in the process.

The problem with going along on offroad rideouts is that while there is plenty of help and support there to get you through the obstacles, and it is immense fun, nobody is actually teaching you the proper skills you should be using. Get the basic skills doing the course, and then build up on the experience by going on rideouts.
