Looking through Dirt bike bitz .. I am getting confused.

On the clothing front there seems to be two sorts ..

Enduro kit and some other sort of kit ... what's the difference?

Then boots .. why have off road boots got smooth soles? They seem to have ones for green lane-ing with grippy soles.

Then there are helmets? Price range from £50 to £200+?

What goggles are best for glasses wearers?

So if you want some retail therapy .. what would you buy?

Sinisalo do very good riding gear for off road. I'll be kitting myself out with their stuff shortly. It's good quality and 'looks' right on the trails, as in it's not multi coloured loud stuff that makes you look like you're hooning even when you're stood still. I don't wear glasses when riding but I know a couple of guys who do, and they use the visor type off road helmets, gives plenty of clearance for the frames and mist up less than goggles.

Like this. Other colours are available and trousers to match.

That's called Enduro kit on dirt bike bitz. There are other stuff that looks like a shirt and trouser.

I would get the most protective boots you can afford, enduro/rallye gloves and make sure you have body armour.

As for a helmet, an enduro type lid is useful because there is a lot more ventilation at the front which helps with all the heavy breathing. I find having a enduro lid with a visor really good because I don't really like goggles unless we're doing fast stuff, in mud/sand, in a group - which only happens occasionally. A visor is great for the long ride to and from the trails.

As for the jacket/top/trousers - there are a plethora of options - I wouldn't be too worried about until you find that you want to do it on a regular basis. The most important quality is that you're ok getting it covered in mud - because it never washes out properly!

much the same as above best boots you can afford as much padding as you need all round spin, hips knees any place where there's not enought meat.

Plus whatever helmet you wear I would say it's essential having a seperate set of safety glasses if you don't like wearing goggles.

if you hook the visor up cos your breathing like a broken steam engine or your using am enduro or a pudding basin. You'll only have one set of eyes, which makes them a good thing to protect.:thumb2

unless you think looking like a pirate is the next fashion statement.

Enduro Kit tends to have pockets to carry bits n pieces, MX clothing does not need them

MX boots are smooth so the foot can slide in a corner, if it is chunky it may catch and do serious knee damage.

Buy the best you can afford

You can get goggles designed to fit over glasses. but I prefer contact lenses for sport.

So if you want some retail therapy .. what would you buy?

Hope that helps Tom.

Tom, your doing the 2 day BMW off road course.

Hire the gear. Because your Tom, and it'll be something else next week and you'll never sell all your "new only used once" clothing in your size to any lardy on UKgser. :D

Over the years, I've had all types of options and................

basically it's a compromise, between waterproof/lightness etc

I had the Sinisalo stuff above and found it was not waterproof whatsoever

It was ok for 3-4 hours maybe

Now I use a cheap pair of Rallye 1 trousers and Goretex liner and a cheap Rallye Jacket with Goretex liner

I find that really good and it is waterproof and versatile

However for offroad, it is way too expensive to buy new

Boots.............get the best

I like Sidi and think together with Alpinestatrs, they make the best offroad boots in the world

Sinisalo waterproof gloves are good or for dry weather, nay type of good Moto-X gloves

BMW Rallye gloves are too expensive for what they are

Helmets - Having worn googles over glasses for years..............i'm now a convert to a cheap s/hand Tour X

Klim gear is very good :thumb2

I fall off a lot 'cos I'm cr@p off road. Most off road kit does not usually have body armour so I have a full upper body armour suit and knee/shin protectors along with padded pants :eek They've saved my bacon plenty of times to have paid back the cost, and some.

Jackets, I use any old light weight jacket (currently an old Tuareg) with the body armour and lining removed and carry light weight s/h army Gortex over jacket/trousers for when it gets wet and muddy.

Ex NCB Wello`s, yellow Plastic Waterproof leggings with Electrical tape repairs over an old Pair of tracky bottoms for the bottom half. A Donkey Jacket tied round the middle with some hairy string. Wooly socks for gloves. Open face helmet and goggles that droop down my face cos the laggy has gone baggy completes the ensemble. No fecker on the trail can get past me cos I ride with elbows sticking right out and keep swerving like a bastid!
