Off-Road Scottoiler

Saw this at the Pebo BMF, still not sure. Gut reaction is to stay as I am and have a clean up, adjust, relube after a run and replace with another cheapo chain when its knackered. :nenau

Scottoiler on an offroad bike? Nope :nono

If the chain is damaged, you won't spot it during cleaning.
If you're riding in sand/gravel/dust oil just turns into grinding paste, wearing out the chain much faster.
There are times you will grab the bars quite firmly, and every time it happens you dose the chain. If you get a bad section where you have to haul the bike about a bit, there's the potential to get oil all over the rear tyre.
If you drop the bike in an awkward place, and have to use the bars to pull it out, you could again cover the back tyre in oil.

I'll stick with cleaning the chain and using dry lube :thumb

Well I've got one on my DRZ and its brill. Unlike the normal scotoiler you control the oil flow by squeezing the grip pump thingy. Far better to have oil and mud on the chain rather than just mud. The oil tends to wash mud off in any case - unlike chain grease. I still thoroughly clean the chain after a run (ie gunk and jet wash) but then you just spin the back wheel whilst pumping the grip and you get a nice clean lubed chain. Much better than sticky chain grease any day. I'd say a chain oiler is essential for off roading. The only downside is that you have to use the supplied grip on the left hand handle bar and its not very grippy.
