I've just come back from the BMW course in wales, which I can't recommend highly enough.
By the time I booked there were no 650s left so I got the 1200. I thought it would be less capable off-road than the lighter bike but it's the bike I ride every day and I'm used to it so I wasn't too worried.
In fact the 1200GS is absolutely astonishing. I'm not suggesting it's as capable as a proper dirt bike but it's far, far more confidence inspiring for an off-road virgin than I expected it to be. By the end of the course I was confidently doing powerslides from a standing start and leaping across terrain I would have hesitated to tackle on foot.
I came off twice in two days on the 12. I swapped for a 650 for 30 minutes so somebody else could try the 12 and came off seven times before being able to wrestle the 12 keys off the other guy. Falling off hurts a lot less than picking the damn bike up afterwards.
Incidentally the instructors for our group were Simon Pavey and Charlie Boorman.
