I was deleting some programmes off my laptop that I wasn't using, and I think I've accidentally deleted something important. On start up all I get is a message " NTLDR is missing, press any key to re start".......
when I press any key, b*gger all happens. Any ideas as to what I've done and is there an easy fix other than taking it back top the shop and let them have a look. Big panic, as I haven't backed it up for ages ( I know, I know.....:blast) an worried that I've fecked it and am going to loose tons of stuff.........:blast:blast:blast

Marcus.

You haven't left a disc in it have you? Remove and CDs, Floppies or DVDs from the drive and try a reboot :)

Post back if its not that :)

hmm ... If he can't reboot his computer .. how did he post a message on the bulletin board :mmmm

I will get my coat :D

message " NTLDR is missing,

Fixed a pc with this problem just last week. Wouldn' even boot into safe mode, so......went into bios...set to boot from cd drive...stuck xp disc in and once it booted from cd, selected safe mode with command prompt.....in dos window type chkdsk /r and hit return....should run through and providing it can fix any error's it finds it will eventually boot into windows again ok.

One other thing...have you an external zip drive or similar?......if so try disconnecting the ribbon cable and rebooting....ther's some stuff on techie forums about that

I'll try these fixes,I'm posting this using my old faithful PC tucked away in my home office. Yes I'm on XP.

Don't have an XP cd, it came already loaded onto the laptop. Should I have had a cd with it?.:nenau

You should have some sort of recovery disc but I used my own xp disc for the mates pc I fixed even though my disc clearly states 'for use with dell pc's only!

You are only using it to boot into windows so you can then repair any errors it finds so any xp disc should be ok...friends, neighbours etc:thumb2

Thanks for that tip, I'll make some enquiries and get hold of a cd from somewhere. Didn't get a recovery cd either. Bl**dyComet.........:(

Most of the PC's which come without a Windows CD, tell you to make your own backup copy when you first get the machine....:nenau

As I understand it, you shouldn't need a full recovery/install disc, there are just a couple of files that you'll need to copy across into the directory that they should be in......small enough for one of us to email or rename temporarily and upload here for you :)

Cheers for that, I'll see how I get on tomorrow getting a disc..........if I can't I may ask for a file to be put on here.........:thumb2

Latest update. Tried with an XP disc, still refused to boot up, the wife took it into work for her IT bod to have a look , and he rekons the hard drive is fried and nothing to do with anything which was/was not deleted. £ 50 for a new hard drive and £100 for data recovery................bugger!!!!!
