Ohlins ??

Has anyone raised the ride height of a standard 1200 by changing the supension? I was idly thinking about it but I'm not sure if it would be possible, there's only about 2mm gap between the swinging arm and the exhaust pipe.

I'm thinking of getting the IKON ( KONI ) guys here in sydney to build me a damper unit based around the stock spring.
I'm happy with the spring range - but the damping knob has seized ( 1100 ).

I'll let you know how i get on - they've already agreed to ' have a look ' :)

damn

Micky you bastid, you've sold me! :D

Did a search around: the price, maintenance interval, maintenance cost was simply unbeatable. And now Micky put the final dot by saying from direct experiences that they don't loose much to famous Öhlins in terms of how well planted they are on the road.

So went over to the credit card bill by getting a good Wilbers Technik deal from FleaBay directly from the factory. :) Slightly used rear shock, rebuilt by the factory, but they choose the spring and setup it according to my specs anyway before shipping it. Got the Wilby "type 640" shock about half the price they normally cost and they gave 1 year warranty for it too :clap .

The extra hydraulic adjustable preload adjuster costs bloody 208EURos additional plus 58EUR work time since the shock needs to be dissasembled for that, thus i skipped it this time, and for this money (that's even more than the shock itself costed), i gladly fek with the c-spanner to preload it :D.

I gave a bit stronger spring specs for the setup procedure guys, plan is to use the Wilby shock for third-world travelling two-up-full-of-luggage bad road abuse, since i got some plans in the head spinning. On previous Iran trip the stock shock bottomed out intensly, so i hope the stronger spring solves the issue. Probably using the stock Showa shock here at local rides and communiting as long as it lasts (currently 50K and counting), coz i think the Wilby i setuped has too strong spring for a solo riding i do here at home.

Well anyways, let's see it if the Blue Shock arrives from Germany after few weeks...

No doubt about that Thunder... first time they were rebuilt at Harris Performance, the main importers, and the second time at Kais Performance, Manchester (authorised dealer) and they were never as good as they were when they were new. Sherpa had his rebuilt elsewhere and was happy with them when he got them back.

One of those things I s'pose... All I know is I've ridden high mileages on the Öhlins and the Wilbers, summer and winter, through rivers and deserts, and when the Wilbers were rebuilt they were as good as new inside and out, but we couldn't say that of the Öhlins!

Ten to fifteen thousand miles and the Öhlins were either leaking or bottom ball joint seized and grotty, or both... and the paint on the springs peeling off. Not so with the Wilbers, they only went back at 20,000 miles as a matter of routine, cos Wilbers wanted to have a look at them... as good as new. They put a new main seal in as a matter of course because the units were stripped down, (the girlfriends and mine) but they didn't want one.

No doubt about it MikeP... good suspenders are worth 10bhp over stock units :thumb

That's my sixpenneth :beerjug:

Glad to be of help Margus.... I have this subtle charm

Hope you're happy with the Wilbers.... got my sixfifty out today and it was like riding a magic carpet compared to the 1200GS-A

The 1200GS-A is going to make room for the F800GS... and that will have Wilbers :D

Strange this thread is resurrected just after I've taken my Ohlins off for a re-furb/service.

They've done 24,000 miles (mainly with a fully loaded bike), no leaks, no seized adjusters, no paint flaking and no corrosion.

I'll wait to see what the price of the service is (I've been quoted £100 for each) and what they are like in terms of ride etc.

I've only taken them off because I have some work to do on the bike, it seems like a good opportunity with it stripped anyway and they are overdue a service according to most advice.

hydraulic pre-load

My 1200 has technoflex suspension. I had the remote preload fitted and for sure its well worth it. makes it so simple to adjust when on/off road and solo or two up.
For some info DPS Racing in Keighley www.dpsracing.co.uk are main s for Ohlins, Wilbers, WhitePower and Technoflex. Apparently they all use springs and cases from the same manufacturer. The technoflex are totally handbuilt. They prepare race bikes amongst other things. Depending where you are they are excellent at set ups.

DON'T LOOK AT ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL YOU HAVE TRIED MAXTON IN CHESHIRE.
THEY WILL CUSTOM MAKE YOUR SHOCK TO YOUR WEIGHT AND RIDING STYLE.
I HAVE JUST FITTED ONE TO MY 06 1200 GS IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE BIKE.....AND YOU ONLY NEED TO REPLACE THE REAR. HAVE A LOOK AT THERE WEBSITE TRUST ME YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED :thumb . >>>>>>>>> www.maxtonsuspension.co.uk

p.s.and they only need servicing every 15,000 miles.

Over on the Adventure site they are very keen on Wilbers, but I don't think there is a UK importer.

Wilbers shocks are advertised in the Wunderlich catalogue, at page 104, which can be obtained from SPC motorcycles in Lower Farringdon near Alton. They do a full range of suspension units in 630 and 640 sizes in "comfort" (Up to 90kg rider) ,"strong" (heavier riders) and "superstrong" (over total approved weight).

SPC are the UK importers for Wunderlich accessories.

Catalogue pricing is £352.40 inc VAT each front/rear for the comfort/strong models.

Superstrong models are £533.10 in VAT each front/rear.

I'm too lazy to compare prices with Ohlins, do your own web search on that one.

http://www.wunderlich.co.uk/

http://www.spc-bmw.co.uk/

Their phone number for enquiries is 01420 588704.

Hope this is of help to someone.
