Oil change and engine bars

I'm going to put engine bars on my 2000 GS and was told that some of the engine bars make it difficult to do an oilfilter change. Any one had that problem and with what bars? Also saw a pair of BMW bars bent right to the engine after a 20 mph slip on black ice? Is this just a freak incident or are they just softer than the rest?

Crash bars only interfere with an oil change if the bars cover the oil filter. Otherwise not an issue.

Mainly the early BMW engine bars are the problem.
They mount onto the sump guard, which means removing bars everytime you do an oil change.

The later type have detachable lowers, so aren't a problem.

I got some SW motech bars from Nippy Normans for my 01 GS, mainly because were cheapest at £100 and looked fine - no problem doing oil change (two extra bolts to remove bar across bottom) and hardly even showed a scratch when I dropped it on ice yesterday!

Am i correct in beliving that you can not remove the cyclinder head covers with the Moteck bars in place ?

I would use the Hepco an Becker type.
no need to strip off to change oil.
also I think, the BMW bars dont touch the ground till after the rocker covers, which makes them a little useless,
except to bolt lights to and rest yer legs = feet forward,
but watch out for plod = you are not in control of yer bike
( according to them anyway )

Adventure bars(1150) rfequire the bottom sectgion removing and these do
work as proved by myself 75 mph crunch with the kamakasi dog I met in Peru
almost hit the pots but no damage to pots bars still re usable even all unbolt ok. Funny tohear of a prang on ice here in beunos aries it`s about 80! still all ends on Sunday.
