Hello

My bike was last serviced Nov 2011 but I've only done 2600 miles. Does the oil and filter need changing? I would like it to last until November 2013 before I get my bike serviced again due to cost but is this ok?

If you put some miles on it over the year by the time the service comes round most of the oil will be newer anyway as they burn so much:augie:D

Yes, just wait until the correct service interval. It's millions of years old anyway so a couple of months won't harm it.

I tend to agree with this advice but BMW will tell you you have to have it serviced with an oil change every 12 months.

I think that it is only really an issue if your bikes still under warranty. As the previous poster says BMW specify thatthe oil should be changed at the "annual service" (ie no matter how few miles you do)

Depends on how those miles were racked up -
But short, stop start rides i'd definately change it.

Spoke to BMW who also agreed with the comments here - run it until next service in November. Thats a saving as money is tight!

To celebrate I've now cleaned her up ready for riding as not done so in months!

Thanks.

The main problem with 'old' oil in the sump is acid build up due to by-products of combustion coupled with moisture from condensation.

You have nothing to worry about as you haven't done many miles in the past 15 months since the oil was last changed.

Gearbox/final drive oil obviously isn't an issue as it isn't exposed to combustion, although it does need changing eventually based on mileage due to a breakdown of the polymer chains under shear through use.

How old is the bike? If cost is your issue, use an independant like Steptoe who will do a better job at a better price:thumb
