I know BM's are prone to using oil, certainly the two old K's i've got do...but anybody have experience of oil consumption on the 1150?
Mines a 53 model with 9K on the clock...............will it get better when it's run in??
Does everybody run synthetic or are any of you running mineral oils like good old Duckhams 20/50. Specs good enough at SF!

Hi,

Oil consumption improves with mileage.

I got my 2004 1150GSA last June with 6,000 miles on it and immediately took in to Norway, Sweden & Denmark. It used 1.5 litres of 10w40 oil in 2,000 miles.

Later in the year (Sept / Oct) I went to Spain & Morocco (via Plymouth - from Edinburgh). It had 13,500 on it when I left and 18.000 when I returned. It used less than a litre in 4,600 miles.

Nowadays (20,000 miles) it doesn't use much at all - just a small top-up after a 930 mile run in February.

I have used 10w40 semi-synthetic mostly (its what Motorrad Central put in) but for Morocco I used fully-synth 15w50.

I only use mineral oil in the 100GS Airhead and my 1974 Land Rover (Halfords 'classic' 20w50 - reputed to be Duckhams).

Keep a regular eye on the oil level for the next few thousand miles, people have suffered disasters by ignoring it.

Bob.

I bought my previous GS with 3K on the clock it used to use between 800 & 250ml a month (1600miles) it was gradually improving up to 38K (When some Twa* knocked me off & wrote it off).
I then bought a W reg 850 GS and with 54K on the clock & it just doesn't use any oil.... I topped it up the other week with 200ml & now the sight glass has the tiniest air bubble showing after a 40 mile run.

when "running in" (0 to 20K)I was told to use 20 / 50W mineral oil.... this is what I am still using now... seems to be doing O.K
