Came back from a ride out today and noticed a cloud of smoke coming from the underneath of my 650 GS !

I checked it closer and found that there seems to be oil coming from the seal on the clutch side of the bike, and was dripping onto the exhaust beneath - has anyone else had this problem? If so, how much is this going to cost me?

Had the same thing on my Dakar, unfortunately (or fortunately for me) it was a warranty job, but I got the distinct impression it was a big job - you have to strip down the clutch and replace two gaskets - the one on the outside and apparently there's one inside too?

Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Stuart. (another one!)

I know you said it was done under warranty, but do you know how much it cost, and how long did they need the bike for?

.... so I Part-ex'd it before the warranty ran out !!!

thats what it looks like ! Its not as bad as that one, just a few drops at the moment.

This was the final straw for me which is why I got rid of it.

The head gasket blew 3 times. First time for me, second time for the dealer on a test ride and third time when my wife and I were in Le Touquet - thank god for BMW rescue services !!!

The bike had a new cylinder head, barrel, piston, radiator, all sorts of seals and gaskets.

I got to the stage where even though I liked the bike I was not confident to go an where on it !!!

Round the world reliable. I think not.

Good luck.

Topic starter,

check the oil pressure switch isn't leaking, which sits behind the cylinder on the oilfilter. After a while some (all??) fail and start to leak. If it does the engine shows exactly the same symptoms as yours. The oil forms a small puddle behind the base of the cylinder then starts to leak down past the front of the engine, exactly where the clutch gasket is.

Mine did, and so dit the oil pressure switch of a friend of mine. Costs about 15 quid in parts...

Got my bike back with new oil pressure switch today!

All sorted now - no more oil leak!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :thumb

Damn these 650's - it's happening again on mine - maybe it never stopped, but I'm selling it as soon as the current leak's fixed - back to Honda methinks. :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

Why get rid of a bike because of a small oil leak? :nenau

If it is the oil pressure switch its cheap enough to get BMW to change it - mines sorted now. :thumb

I've got no plans to get rid of mine because of it !
And theres no Honda's that last as long as a GS - have you ever seen one thats not been eaten by the salt ???!!!!
