Can anyone with a 1300gs have a look at their oil level when the bike is cold. I realise to get an acurate reading it needs to be up to full temp but i expected to see SOME oil in the sight glass when cold and holding it upright.

With older bikes, you expected to see some oil at the base of the glass. Mine shows 3/4 full when cold, then once warm and left standing for 10 minutes after switch off, the level shows half way. I'd check with your service department.

This is what i thought. I've been onto them this morning and have been told 100% it is ok so will try it tonight. It seems a very complicated way to 'dip' oil.

I’d definitely expect to see oil, even with the engine cold

P203 of the. Manual, says don’t put it on the stand

That looks a right faff, For ever I’ve left a bike for five minutes after a ride on the centre stand then checked the level, all by my self with no assistance.

How complicated can they make it sound, just to check the oil level !. And to then say don't put it on the centre stand and get someone to steady the bike while you check the level !!.
Bring back dipsticks :) .

No its easy the side stand is opposite so its a simple case of tipping your bike towards you with the security of the side stand on the other side.
Problem is balancing a G&T at the same time ,, now thats a faff

It's just the way they try to explain it in the manual that's complicated. :) I do as you say on my 1250 and just tip it over from the side stand. I'll probably do it once that way when I get my 1300 and then put it on the centre stand and then make a mental note of where the oil level is. Then always just put it on the centre stand & check it to that remembered reference point.

If you read the manual it does say on the centre stand for the 1250 , like you I have a mental level when on the wheels taken from the manuals correct way . Is a tractor so it will be fine . 👍👍😁

In the 'good old dayz' i used to check my oil before i set off. Now when i get home i can see if i've been riding short of oil. Eeeee progress .....
Or i could just ring 'a specialist workshop' and get them to guarantee it's ok :ROFLMAO:

does this new bike not have an oil level sensor like the 1200LC had? My R1200RS checks the oil level when you start the bike.

The new 1300 already has its owners confused….. and it’s only checking the oil.

PS For those nervous about putting the bike on the side stand and then pulling it upright to vertical, here’s a useful and very simple tip.

1. Put the bike into gear. Why? This will greatly reduce the risk of it rolling forwards. As an alternative, pull the front brake on and hold it back with a cable tie. Release, by pulling the brake lever a bit more and releasing the tie.

2. Find yourself a small piece of wood, just deep enough to hold the bike upright when put beneath the side stand.

3. Extend the side stand, putting the block beneath the foot of the stand.

4. Bingo! One, very stable but vertical bike, standing on its two wheels, supported on its side stand, unable to roll forwards or back.

Check oil at leisure.

Keep the block of wood in one of your huge panniers, in case you ever feel like checking the oil in Tesco’s car park, whilst on your next hoon or blat. You also can keep the looped cable tie there, too.

It’s how I kept my HP4 vertical in my garage, up against a wall. I found the piece of wood in a skip, though I am sure Wunderlich will soon sell an anodised one, especially made for 1300 owners.

Just thought; the 1300 manual will say to "check oil level holding bike upright off side stand" (or words to that effect) because by default the 1300gs doesn't have a centre stand!. The manual will cover all models.

So think I'll just put it on centre stand and look at the level in the sight glass :) .
